PURPOSE:
The Remote Sensing Laboratory-Andrews (RSL-A), located on Joint Base Andrews in Maryland, is searching for an enthusiastic and energetic Engineer II looking to join our dynamic emergency response organization that is responsible for supporting various emergency response assets. In this role, you will mainly be supporting, the National Nuclear Security Administration's (NNSA) Aerial Measuring System (AMS) program as an Equipment Specialist with occasional support to the National Search Program (NSP) in emergency response field operations for real-world and exercise events. As an Engineer II you will maintain radiation detection equipment, training qualifications and execute tasks as assigned in support of the emergency response assets and other office needs.
- Contribute to solutions of assignment-related problems and issues with a moderate scope and of moderate complexity, using a well-defined set of technologies. Solutions use established basic standards, practices and procedures as well as technical knowledge to address problems and complete tasks. Solutions may require evaluation of standards and processes.
- Frequent coordination of discipline information with other departments within the company and with outside vendors. Works with outside contacts as required to obtain relevant information.
- Develop a working knowledge of codes and standards of other disciplines.
- Follow established technical procedures and instructions.
- Coordinate cross-disciplinary work on moderately complex projects.
- After gaining enough experience, develop training documentation and mentor less experienced staff.
- Define specifications for procurements and initiate purchase requests.
- Coordinate with AMS equipment leads to maintain accountability and awareness of shared AMS equipment especially during maintenance or aircraft transit.
- Strong use of documentation/log books to maintain records for responsible equipment. Develop new/improved tracking and documentation methods as appropriate.
- Perform related work as assigned by Management.

Minimum Education and Experience
- Bachelor's degree in an engineering program accredited by the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET) required for Civil, Mechanical and Electrical engineering degrees;
- Or, Calculus-based STEM bachelor's degree in engineering;
- Or Professional Engineer license;
- Or, for Architects, Certification from the National Council or Architectural Registration Board
(NCARB); - Plus at least 2 years' relevant experience. Skill building experience must demonstrate either deeper technical specialization or additional cross-disciplinary knowledge; graduate research experience may be recognized.
- Ability to interpret codes and standards applicable to the position.
- Background in radiation physics is highly desirable. A strong candidate will be able to acquire fundamental radiation physics requisite knowledge to contribute in meaningful ways to detector calibration and maintenance standards.
- Support scientific data collection via airborne systems specialized for gamma radiation.
- Must be able to lift 50 lbs.
- This position is required to meet Deployment Authorization Program (DAP) standards for rapid and no-notice deployments, training, and exercises in support of nuclear response activities throughout CONUS and OCONUS operations. Enrollment in DAP requires maintaining physical abilities as outlined by company standards, current immunizations, current U.S. Passport, and required security clearances.
- Must submit to immunizations for worldwide travel.
- Must be willing to perform non-working hours, on-call duty, and ensure availability to work non-standard hours and deploy worldwide on short notice.
- Ability and willingness to fly in small fixed-wing aircraft and helicopters on a routine basis. Must be willing and able to travel worldwide, sometimes under austere conditions, as a member of NNSA emergency response teams.
Additional Requirements
- Anticipated amount of travel is 25-40%, both domestic and international.
- Must be able to obtain and maintain Department of Energy Q Clearance and Secret Compartmented Information access. This position will be cleared to these levels.
- The primary work location will be based at the Remote Sensing Laboratories at Andrews Air Force Base, Maryland (RSL-A).
- Pre-placement physical examination, which includes a drug screen, is required. MSTS maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing.
- Must possess a valid driver's license.
MSTS is required by DOE directive to conduct a pre-employment drug test and background review that includes checks of personal references, credit, law enforcement records, and employment/education verifications. Applicants offered employment with MSTS are also subject to a federal background investigation to meet the requirements for access to classified information or matter if the duties of the position require a DOE security clearance. Substance abuse or illegal drug use, falsification of information, criminal activity, serious misconduct or other indicators of untrustworthiness can cause a clearance to be denied or terminated by DOE, resulting in the inability to perform the duties assigned and subsequent termination of employment. In addition, Applicants for employment must be able to obtain and maintain a DOE Q-level security clearance, which requires U.S. citizenship, at least 18 years of age. Reference DOE Order 472.2, "Personnel Security". If you hold more than one citizenship (i.e., of the U.S. and another country), your ability to obtain a security clearance may be impacted.
Department of Energy Q Clearance (position will be cleared to this level). Reviews and tests for the absence of any illegal drug as defined in 10 CFR Part 707.4, "Workplace Substance Abuse Programs at DOE Sites," will be conducted. Applicant selected will be subject to a Federal background investigation, required to participate in subsequent reinvestigations, and must meet the eligibility requirements for access to classified matter. Successful completion of a counterintelligence evaluation, which may include a counterintelligence-scope polygraph examination, may also be required. Reference 10 CFR Part 709, "Counterintelligence Evaluation Program."

Annual salary range for this position is:$77,376.00 - $116,064.00.
Starting salary is determined based on the position market value, the individual candidate education and experience and internal equity.
