Purpose

Oak Ridge National Laboratory invites you to apply to the ORNL Distinguished Fellowship Program. The ORNL Distinguished Fellowships are awarded to outstanding early career scientists and engineers with demonstrated success within their academic, professional, and technical areas, who have high potential to be future ORNL leaders. These highly selective Fellowships, available to a variety of research disciplines, are awarded twice annually, and are an integral part of ORNL's recruiting efforts to attract a diverse and talented workforce that will advance the missions and goals of ORNL and the Department of Energy.

Major Duties/Responsibilities

Distinguished Fellows are expected to contribute significantly to the research efforts of ORNL, publishing their work and representing their work and ORNL across the scientific community. Fellows will be rooted in research Divisions and conduct their work in a collaborative and multidisciplinary team environment for a three-year Fellowship appointment. ORNL hires all Fellows as research staff associates with the aim to retain each Fellow at the end of the Fellowship term, if it is mutually desirable for the Fellow and Laboratory. A special aspect of the Fellowship program is a formal mentorship program designed to facilitate successful integration into the ORNL scientific community and alignment of each Fellow’s research activities within DOE programs.

Applicants who are selected to become an ORNL Fellow will be assigned to one of four named Fellowships listed below, based primarily on scientific discipline.

• The Alston S. Householder Fellowship honors Alston Householder, founding director of the Mathematics Division (now Computer Science and Mathematics Division) at ORNL, and recognizes his seminal research contributions to the fields of numerical analysis and high-performance computing. Householder Fellows demonstrate competency in one or more principal areas including approximation theory, numerical solutions of partial differential equations, uncertainty quantification, optimization, and high performance computing. This prestigious Fellowship offers an opportunity to conduct exceptional and innovative research in mathematics, statistics, and scientific computing for applications of national priority utilizing the world’s most powerful extreme scale computing platforms including TITAN and SUMMIT.
• The Liane B. Russell Fellowship honors Liane Russell, ORNL’s groundbreaking geneticist, National Academy of Sciences member, prominent conservationist, and strong advocate for women in science. Russell Fellows demonstrate competency in one or more areas of computational biology, genomics, microbial ecology, biophysics and structural biology, environmental and ecosystem sciences, climate change science, environmental assessment, and data systems. Russell Fellows will have the opportunity to bring new scientific experiences and approaches to understand complex biological and ecological systems and their relationship with the environment, evaluate the consequences of alternative energy and environmental strategies, and develop innovative strategies and technologies that will strengthen the nation's leadership in creating solutions to help sustain the Earth’s natural resources.

• The Alvin M. Weinberg Fellowship honors Alvin Weinberg, the longest serving Director of Oak Ridge National Laboratory, from 1955 to 1972, and champion for promoting the intersection of science and technology with society to benefit mankind. Weinberg Fellows demonstrate competency in one or more areas including chemistry and chemical engineering, radiochemistry, isotope science, materials science, nuclear science, renewable energy, and engineering with research interests that align with the core capabilities of ORNL in applied science areas. The Weinberg Fellowship offers prospects to contribute in developing innovative capabilities in DOE-relevant areas of science and technology.
• The Eugene P. Wigner Fellowship, which is ORNL’s oldest Fellowship, honors Eugene Wigner, Nobel Laureate (1963) and first Director of Research and Development at ORNL. Wigner Fellows, demonstrate outstanding scientific ability and research interests that align with the core capabilities of ORNL in basic science areas including materials research, neutron scattering science, nuclear physics, condensed-matter physics and materials science, chemical and molecular science, plasma and fusion energy science. The Fellowship provides the opportunity for those of exceptional ability to bring new perspectives and capabilities to DOE-relevant fundamental research that can result in new foundational discoveries for advances in energy-related processes and technologies.

Qualifications

Qualifications Required

Applicants must have received their doctoral degree in a science or engineering field before their start date and can be no more than five years beyond receiving their doctoral degree at the date of application submission. Applicants should not have previously held more than one postdoctoral appointment. Current ORNL postdocs and ORNL staff members are not eligible to apply.
