The Studio Art Department invites applications for the position – 3D Laboratory Technician.This is a temporary position supervised by and reporting to the chair of the Studio Art Department.
Responsibilities
The Art department has created programs of major study that are deeply integrated with the overall liberal arts education that is the hallmark of Oberlin. A chief goal of the department is to help students acquire the ability to understand and critically respond to our current visual culture and how it has been influenced by the traditions of visual representation from the past. Students develop sophisticated written, technical, and visual abilities that allow them to convey their ideas, their understanding, and their appreciation of art through a range of mediums spanning 2D, 3D, and 4D practices.

The incumbent will support the faculty and staff in Studio Art in their teaching efforts by managing emergent digital technologies related to the operation of the following stations: CNC Router, Laser
Cutter, 3D Printers, Digital Plotter, and the more traditional shop stations such as the table saw, band saws, drill presses, planer, joiner, panel saw, and various hand tools. Running a safe and efficient networked maker lab. A demonstrated broad-based ability to maintain, oversee, and manage student access to, and engagement with the breadth of equipment in the Lab, insuring that supplies and class preps are available and in place. The incumbent could potentially teach up to one course a semester that introduces 3D tools and spatial studio art practice in support of a holistic Studio Art curriculum.
- Train and demonstrate applicable software used in the art studio to produce finished projects. Coordinate software updates for digital workstations.
- Supervise activities, oversee, and instruct students on proper use of tools and equipment used for projects in Sculpture/Installation, Painting and Drawing, Photography, Integrated Media, Reproducible Media, and advanced major courses.
- Incumbent maintains records of which faculty and students have been trained on specific stations within the Fabrication lab. Oversee and enforce an equipment checkout system for the after-hours use of tools in tandem with facilities manager and faculty.
- Fabricate and repair necessary items for studio art instruction and exhibition; Assist students with the installation of class projects and exhibitions in conjunction with Facilities Manager and faculty.
- Organize and maintain a professional shop environment. Maintain storage rooms in 3D Intermedia Lab in consultation with 3D media faculty. The incumbent will order and stock all requested materials and tools and maintain Fabrication Lab records. This includes, but is not limited to, inventory, maintenance, purchase records, and budget.
- Maintain and organize repairs records and Safety Data Sheets (SDS) that are accessible to Studio Art staff and students; Handle compressed gases and potentially dangerous materials.
- Maintain and troubleshoot all shop equipment; regularly analyze condition of equipment and coordinate maintenance and repair.
- Develop and test complex equipment, instruments, and materials for class, laboratory and research use.
- Instruct students in safe use of equipment or tools.
- Prepare or produce materials for class, laboratory, exhibition and research use within the Fabrication Lab and Studio Art curriculum; Assist students in constructing complex projects.
- Demonstrate routine laboratory, shop, or studio procedures to students; Supervise students and/or employees working in the fabrication lab; Assist studio instructors in setting up shop procedures for students; Give technical advice relative to equipment.
- Clean and/or supervise cleaning and ensure the shop is in order; Supervise student assistants and users in proper lab clean up.
- Consult with faculty members on specifications for new or specialized equipment or materials; Assist in the design, development, construction or assembly of new apparatus.
- Work with other members of the Studio Art support staff to coordinate cohesive plans across the teaching studios.
- Incumbent could potentially teach up to one course per semester, depending on the needs of the department.
- Candidate must be able to lift 50 pounds in order to manage materials.
Qualifications
Required Qualifications
- High school diploma and college level coursework or a combination of experience and education which includes courses related to the operation, use and maintenance of fabrication machinery and tools such as Table saws, Chop Saws, Band Saws, Drill press, Joiner, Planer, Computer Numerical Controller (CNC), Industrial Sewing Machine, Laser Cutter, Hydraulic Nail Guns, Scroll Saw, 3-D printer, hand drills and welding equipment; construction, mechanical and electrical skills needed.
- Expertise in carpentry as related to contemporary art practices and other kinds of fabrication; ability to maintain and troubleshoot equipment;
- A demonstrated proficiency in applicable software: Illustrator, RhinoCAM, Sketchup, Blender, Simplify 3D and AutoCAD are required.
- Experience in coordinating software updates for digital workstations
- Favorable references
- The ability to teach college-level courses in the woodshop/fabrication lab environment.
Desired Qualifications
Bachelor and/or Master of Fine Arts degree. The ability to work effectively with a diverse range of individuals including students and Studio Art faculty on projects which sometimes embody unorthodox ideas.
Compensation
Within the range established for this position, salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience.
