What are the responsibilities and job description for the Ground Fish Production Manager position at OBI Seafoods, LLC?

SUMMARY:

 The Production Manager is responsible for overseeing all aspects of the facility’s ground fish production operations. That includes: planning and forecasting for production; training and coaching of key staff on company standards; interfacing with other departments to ensure facility goals are achieved; gathering, reviewing and distribution production data; tracking and managing employee performance and disciplinary action; and managing all packaging and production supply inventories to accommodate production needs throughout the season. 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

 Oversees and participates in the development of performance, efficiency, and product quality standards in the factory. Provides direction and insight to forepersons, leads, other department managers, regarding the coordination of production operating standards with overall company objectives.

  • Determines the appropriate level of labor (number and skill type) prior to the season and mid-season in accordance with changes in production.
  • Ensures the general conformance with employment policies, progressive discipline, the issuance of warnings, and the administration of other disciplinary measures when necessary.
  • Manage internal programs such as communications, performance evaluations, training, exit interviews, break policies and cross training.
  • Communicates and enforces established quality standards for all products and grades; develops and implements methods to measure, monitor and test such standards
  • Monitors daily recovery and production numbers. Makes necessary adjustments to maintain expected output and quality.
  • Manages shift assignments to insure balanced manning throughout the factory.
  • Trains, coaches and evaluates forepersons, leading by example, demonstrating leadership skills and striving toward continuous improvement.
  • Maintain inventories including supplies of fiber, liners, additives, and related production and packaging materials.
  • Plans and conducts factory safety briefings each season that new processors join the plant to ensure a complete understanding of proper equipment operation and location of safety emergency stops.
  • Makes recommendations for factory modifications to improve quality and production.
  • Interfaces on a regular basis with the Plant Manager to facilitate steady availability of quality fish.
  • Provides input to plant annual budgets and monitors budget performance through the year.
  • Actively participates in group interviews and new employee orientations prior to the season.
  • Handles all personnel matters with confidentiality, sensitivity and in accordance with company and legal guidelines. Oversee the production of a quality product meeting OBI standards.
  • Ensure safety of plant personnel by overseeing the safe use of equipment and by maintaining an accident free workplace.
  • Work with all departments to accomplish pre-season work lists and plant upgrades.
  • Must be willing and able to live and work in a remote location and in a multi-cultural environment.
  • Other duties as assigned

 EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

  • In depth knowledge of production principles, techniques, and related equipment.
  • Minimum 3 years in a seafood production environment with at least three years of increasingly responsible management experience.
  • High aptitude for problem solving and troubleshooting.
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills.
  • Above-average computer experience in a Windows environment.
  • Practical work experience in supervision, cost and budget control and quality and product consistency.
  • Must have interpersonal skills necessary to foster cooperation and to effectively communicate with others.
  • Must be available to employees to advice and counsel when appropriate.
  • Solid understanding of employment law and EEOC compliance.
  • Ability to motivate, constructively criticize and build high production teams through exemplary leadership.
  • HACCP Certification.
  • Knowledge of MSDS and OSHA requirements.
  • Must be able to live and work in confined quarters.
  • Must always be professional and represent OBI Seafoods with the highest standards.
  • Able to work well under pressure, 12 or more hours a day, 7 days a week.

COMPENSATION: 

  • Season will range from January through November.
  • Pay rate depends on experience.
  • Room and board are included.

WORK ENVIRONMENT 

Working Conditions and Physical Effort: 

  • Work involves daily exposure to unusual elements such as dirt, dust, fumes, extreme temperatures, humidity, darkness, and/or noise. 
  • Most of the work area is done in a kitchen setting, however this plant is a fast-paced seafood processing facility. Work environment in departments involve daily exposure to physical risks, such as working around mechanical, chemical, and electrical hazards. 
  • Position requires the ability to stand, sit at a desk, walking around office and plant, lifting, and carrying packages up to 50 pounds, utilizing fine dexterity. Requires reaching, kneeling, crawling, and twisting to inspect equipment. Also requires the ability to see, Hear, and communicate with associates as well as others by utilizing professional etiquette. 
  • Personal protective equipment, as defined by OBI Seafoods, will be provided. 
  • Position will be exposed to different levels of stress and responsibilities.
