This position is part-time, requiring a five (5) hour commitment each school day for morning and afternoon routes. This is a perfect position for someone who needs extra income or wants open time during the day!
POSITION SUMMARY: To transport students to and from designated stops while maintaining a safe environment and in accordance with the policies of the Marion County Public Schools and the State Department of Education guidelines. Work is performed under the direction and supervision of the assigned administrator.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: NOTE: These examples are intended only as illustrations of the various types of work performed in a position allocated to this class. - Perform light maintenance such as checking and adding fuel, cleaning, sweeping and washing bus.
- Operate the lift while loading and unloading wheelchair students. Secure wheelchairs in place on the bus.
- Exercise maximum regard for the safety and welfare of all transported students while operating a school bus.
- Work closely with the Transportation Department and the school Principal regarding hazards encountered on bus routes.
- Inform the Principal regarding any suggested changes in route schedules or bus loads.
- Obey all traffic laws.
- Complete and submit to the Transportation Department all required reports and information in accordance with the policies of the School Board of Marion County and State Board of Education Regulations.
- Possess the physical and mental capability of operating all school buses assigned to the transportation fleet.
- Address and assist with student discipline problems, aided by the school administration and Transportation Department
- Manage students in a positive and effective way.
- Comply with Florida State School Board Regulations and District School Board Policies pertaining to school bus driver certification and responsibility.
- Wear approved uniform.
- Attend assigned workshops and training programs.
- Submit to drug and/or alcohol testing when required by School Board
SKILLS & ABILITIES:
Education – Graduation from a standard high school or equivalency diploma.
Experience – Have at least five (5) years of licensed driving experience, excluding driving permit experience. Certificates and/or Licenses - Possession of a valid Florida CDL Class B with “P” and “S” endorsement driver license. Complete forty hours of School Bus Driver training offered by the Marion County School System or hold a valid certificate of training provided by the State of Florida, [FLDOE 6A-3.0141(4)(b)].
Other Requirements - Must be 21 years of age or older. Good driving record with no more than 4 points on driver’s license. Be examined annually by a licensed physician designated by the Board, per Florida State Statute 1012.45(1) and pass the physical using the approved physical form. Must pass the National Safety Council’s Defensive Driving Course provided by the MCPS.
NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: Any of the following will render an individual ineligible for this position: Received a citation for driving under the influence. Falsified an accident report. Received a citation for passing a stopped school bus within last five (5) years. At fault accident resulting in a fatality. *Loss of or suspension of driver’s license for traffic related offenses/violations of F.S.S. 316 within last three (3) years or for multiple no-traffic related offenses. More than four (4) points on license within the last three (3) years. Reckless driving within the last five (5) years. Railroad crossing offenses within the last five (5) years. Leaving the scene of an accident within the last five (5) years. Failure to report an accident within the last five (5) years. Speeding in a school zone within the last five (5) years. No more than two (2) moving violations including adjudication withheld, for moving violations with the last five (5) years. Speeding in excess of twenty-one miles per hour over posted speed limit within the last five (5) years. No more than twenty points on license within the last ten (10) years.
*This refers to loss or suspension of license for reasons related to traffic offenses to include but not be limited to failure to pay traffic fine, failure to attend driving school, failure to maintain vehicle registration, judgment reasons, an accident without auto liability insurance, or refusal to submit to a breath/blood/urine alcohol test.
