Job Summary
Direct all aspects of Georgia mining operations and the associated planning and regulatory requirements to meet the needs of the business and plant processing units in quality, quantity, cost, safety, and regulatory compliance.
Essential Functions
Regulatory:
- Oversee mining permitting process, assuring that all permits are up to date and being properly followed.
- Support in the development and approval on new permits required to meet future operational needs.
- Monitor reclamation efforts, assuring reclamation plans are being followed.
- Act as a contact person to regulatory agencies.
- Remain current on local, state, and federal laws that have an impact on our mining operations.
- Assure that operations people understand regulations.
- Assure that all necessary bonds are in place for mining and reclamation.
Minerals Management:
- Direct exploration projects, perform an economic analysis for purchase of clay reserves and negotiate land acquisitions
- Oversee testing of all existing and prospective deposits, assuring that reserves are quantified and qualified to meet business needs.
- Maintain minerals book summarizing status of all Oil-Dri reserves (quality, properties, cost as well as location) as well as competitive information. Issues periodic summary update if significant activity is ongoing. Furnish accounting with annual, accurate information on reserves as well as reclamation liabilities.
- Check reserves on as needed basis for contaminants/ impurities in coordination with Innovation Center.
- Quantify forward costs of raw materials, considering overburden removal, hauling, royalties, etc.
- Maintain property boundaries to avoid encroachments; develop maps of company lands.
- Maintain relations with landowners, the community and customers that are affected by Oil-Dri, so as those outside the Company regard Oil-Dri as a premier company.
Operations Management:
- Develop or review mining plans for all active mining sites, providing direction and feedback on short term (next 60 days) and middle term (next 36 months).
- Oversee surveying of properties to verify overburden removal and mining processes.
- Review monthly reports on overburden removal, clay uncovered and mined, assuring data is correct and in agreement with drilling and prospecting data. Communicate on significant variances.
- Oversee overburden removal, mining, and reclamation processes at plants. Maintain all data associated with mining operation including a rolling twelve-month forecast using the stripping report format.
- Assure mining costs are within planned costs, inclusive of stripping accrual accounts.
- Outline and review reclamation process, recommending modifications where reclamation plans is not being adhered to.
- Report on key operational metrics for mining area.
- Maintain capital equipment in accordance with best practices.
- Develop environmental plans for mining, reclamation and mitigation and negotiate with federal, state, and local officials to obtain the necessary permits that mining may proceed without interruption.
- Devise a program on mine layout and development for new mines, including land clearance, environmental structures and facilities, and the location of roads and drainage, ensure adequate sampling of the deposit for quality and quantity.
- Plan the stripping, loading, and hauling operations to meet plant production requirements.
- Ensure mine plans are current and extend at least five years ahead of mining.
- Develop and manage land reclamation plans for all properties.
- Develop and manage a formal timber management plan for all properties which include timber enhancement, sales, and reforestation.
- Prepare capital and operating budgets.
- Other duties as assigned.

- BS Mining Technology, Engineering, or Related
