Salary: $45,000.00
Ojai Valley School is a pre-kindergarten to grade 12 boarding and day school
located on two campuses in Ojai, California. The Lower Campus serves students in
grades PK-8 and the Upper Campus serves students in grades 9-12. Students can
participate on the Interscholastic Equestrian Association (IEA) competitive riding
teams in grades 4-12. Last year, Ojai Valley School riders won both individual and
team awards in dressage at the IEA national championships in North Carolina.
Students will compete in both dressage and huntseat in the 2024-25 school year.
Summary of Position Ojai Valley School is currently seeking a qualified candidate
for a full-time Huntseat Coach, under the supervision of the Equestrian Director for
the 2024-25 academic year. The goal is to provide a fun safe and healthy
environment for students and staff. We expect the staff to take their job and
responsibilities seriously, but we also want the staff to have an enriching
experience. The Heatseat Coach will provide school leadership and instruction by
performing the following duties:
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other
duties may be assigned.
- Coordination with Equestrian Director
operations and instructional plans.
o Notify Equestrian Director if problems occur with students, staff,
parents, or horses. c. Consult Equestrian Director on necessary
appropriations.
- Coordination with School Administration
o Ensure that administrative policies are carried out.
o Act as liaison between equestrian program and OVS faculty and staff.
o Attend all faculty, division, and all-school meetings.
o Coordinate the equestrian activities.
o Work with administration and academic teachers to schedule
classes, activities and special events.
o Develop curriculum appropriate for each class.
o Obtain copies of fee schedules signed by parents.
- Work with nurse to:
o Make sure forms are filed on accidents.
o Ensure stable staff is informed about potential student health
- Horse care
o Hoof Care
o Create shoeing list every Monday.
o Assist farrier when necessary with difficult horses. Consult with
Equestrian director if problems arise.
o Attend to special hoof care when necessary.
o Veterinary Care
o Assess horses daily for illness/injury.
o Attend to routine veterinary care.
o Contact Equestrian Director or Equine Manager if a veterinarian needs
to be called. i. Follow treatment plan for ill/injured horses. Record
symptoms, vitals, and daily treatment on stall chart.
o All horses will be turned out, longed, or schooled at least
five times per week. Maintain daily records of all activities.
- Instruction and coaching
- Teach riding classes following curriculum guide.
o Assign horses to students.
o Explain stable rules.
o Supervise student preparations.
o Check tack for fit and safety.
o Supervise horse and equipment care after riding.
o Maintain tack in good repair, label, and store properly.
- Report absences to appropriate administrator.
- Assist in planning and supervision of special events.
- Assist in the organization and supervision of equestrian camp trips (1),
- Supervise scheduled Saturday recreational riding,
feeding, and cleaning. XI. Facility Management
o Water arena as needed.
o Tack and vet room should be clean and organized.
o Wash racks should be clear of debris.
o Keep office organized.
o Keep gates closed except for when in use.
