What are the responsibilities and job description for the Airport Communications Specialist position at Okaloosa County Sheriff's Office?
This is a 12-hour position, rotating from days to nights every quarter.
**Background Investigation Waiver (Required): Please Click Here for the Background Waiver.**Coordinates airport operational activities and requests for service to include emergencies through a centralized communications center by obtaining information, classifying its content and disseminating to the correct personnel.
- Answers airport's main telephone line and provides basic information to traveling public, routes calls to individuals and appropriate divisions, prioritizes service requests and applies pre-established response protocols.
- Must be able to process information received and ask appropriate follow-up questions.
- Communicates with airport personnel including operations, maintenance and administration personnel over radio frequencies dispatching task assignments and documenting specifics including time, location and disposition.
- Must have the ability to prioritize calls and must have the ability to multi-task.
- Dispatches and monitors the status of deputies on all airport properties.
- Obtains information from deputies for NCIC/FCIC checks.
- Provides predefined alert notifications to key staff members.
- Relays emergency information in accordance with established procedures.
- Provides liaison services with other agencies during emergencies or mutual aid circumstances.
- Monitors multi-ban radio consoles, closed-circuit television system, card access system, security alarms, emergency phones (elevator/garage), building automation systems, weather warning equipment and flight tracking devices.
- Provides input to the Airport Maintenance Management System (AMMS) to include documenting discrepancies and establishing work orders.
- Maintains active records of Notice to Airmen (NOTAMS), severe weather notifications and other airport-originated communications.
- Communicates Prior Permission Requests (PPR) with Airport Operations concerning transient military and charter aircraft requesting special parking arrangements.
- Answers terminal courtesy phones and facilitates terminal paging requests.
- Must be able to meet work schedule and attendance standards.

- Must have the ability to follow directives and policies of the agency.
- Performs related duties as necessary.
- Must be at least 18 years old with a high school diploma, Florida General Education Development Test (GED), or Out-of-state GED, with a transcript of test results.
- Must be able to operate a computer, two-way radio, copier, fax and telephone.
- Must be able to work rotating shifts, weekends, holidays and overtime, scheduled and unscheduled.
- NCIC/FCIC certification required within 6 months of employment
- Must be able to meet and maintain requirements of Transportation Security Administration (TSA) security clearance.
- Must complete Secure Identification Display Area (SIDA) training after employment but prior to starting job functions.
- Experience in a public safety, airport or similar technical environment is preferred.
Physical Requirements: Must be physically able to operate a variety of machines and equipment including computer, office equipment, telephone, etc. Must be able to exert 25 to 50 pounds of force occasionally and 10 to 25 pounds of force frequently, and/or a negligible amount frequently to lift, carry, push, pull, or otherwise move objects. May require bending, stooping and twisting. Physical demands are essentially those of sedentary work.
