Third or fourth year college student pursuing a degree in environmental science, public health, biology, chemistry or related field, or recent graduate.


Regular and reliable attendance is a necessary component of job/position. Individuals required to use County vehicles and equipment must have a valid driver’s license and be free of any major traffic violations for the last three (3) years.Under supervision of the Environmental Lab Manager and with technical guidance from the Environmental Lab Specialist. This internship will be a good fit for students interested in drinking water quality, chemistry and environmental science.
  • Assist with coordination of our regional Soil and Water Conservation Districts and Local Public Health agencies collaborative drinking water monitoring projects
  • Participate in basic lab activities such as:
    1. logging received water samples
    2. preparing samples for bacteria and anion (nitrate, nitrite, fluoride, sulfate, chloride) analysis
    3. preparing water analysis kits
    4. preparing and analyzing water project data
    5. provide consultation to the public regarding sample analysis results, and referral to additional educational and assistance resources.
  • Assist with community outreach and nitrate screening community events, occasionally evenings or weekends.
  • Knowledge of lab, physical, chemical and biological risks and safety measures.
  • Skill in analyzing problems and developing efficient and effective solutions.
  • Skill in the use of computers, technology, custom lab instrumentation software and lab equipment.
  • Ability to identify and address environmental conditions apt to effect integrity or quality of samples.
  • Ability to develop and follow complex written and oral instructions.
  • Ability to make legible handwritten entries on labels and laboratory records.
  • Ability to interpret maps, technical equipment operation manuals and quality assurance manuals.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with others including the public.
