Assistant Controller

At the foundation level, OEF very much operates like a private sector organization with an emphasis on efficiency, growth and making tangible impacts within the conflict contexts in which it works.  OEF provides the financial, strategic, and operational support needed to iteratively develop solutions to complex problems that could not have been designed in advance.

Job Type:

Full-time; Exempt; Salaried

Compensation:

The hiring range for this position is $105,000 - $130,000 annual salary. 

This position is benefits eligible.  Offered benefits include Medical, Vision, Dental, Life Insurance, Short and Long Term Disability, and a 401k.

Location:

This position is located at the One Earth Future Foundation central office in Broomfield, CO. The OEF office operates on a hybrid in-office/work from home model.

 

Primary Responsibilities:

The Assistant Controller leads the accounting team in providing critical decision support at all levels of the organization through accounting, financial reporting, and other financial modeling. This position provides a risk management voice to leadership regarding policies and operational decisions. The position oversees the team in designing and implementing timely accounting and financial reporting essential in the support of business and strategic decisions, and for monitoring the performance of the organization’s programs and supporting services.

Functionally, the Assistant Controller is responsible for ensuring the accounting, treasury, and statutory and management reporting systems and policies. Provide high quality, timely data and analysis for strategic decision support. The Assistant Controller works closely with the Global Finance Controller and CFO on strategic matters, including the setting of departmental priorities, as well as representing Finance in cross-organizational working groups.

The Assistant Controller provides innovative solutions for emerging financial management needs.

This position communicates with a diverse staff in multiple locations using email, video and audio conference technology. This position must be able to communicate and collaborate effectively globally.

Specific Responsibilities & Duties: 

Strategic Leadership & Governance Support

  • Represent Accounting and Finance perspective in various cross-organization groups and special initiatives (e.g. cost recovery, policy development, allocation methodologies, etc.).
  • Responsible for the preparation of required internal financial reports.

Compliance & Risk Management

  • Work with the Global Finance controller to develop internal controls to safeguard the assets of the organization.
  • Ensure compliance with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP), internal controls, established policies and procedures, and ensure integrity, suitability, accuracy and timeliness of internal information.
  • Support the develop of finance-related policies that appropriately address risk.
  • Oversee compliance with payroll-related regulations for US paid employees, including field staff.
  • Plan and manage month end closing processes, financial statements preparation, external audit(s), annual tax filings and other statutory reporting requirements.
  • Work in coordination with Global Finance Controller to manage risk by securing adequate insurance policies.

 

Accounting Operations

  • Lead the organization’s accounting unit and functions, including establishment and maintenance of the organization’s accounting principles, practices, procedures, and initiatives.
  • Coordinate the work of Accounting with International Finance & Accounting unit to ensure smooth functioning and efficient workflow.
  • Identify opportunities for process improvements to ensure continued high functioning of the department.
  • Ensures accurate and timely month-end close process; review balance sheet reconciliations; troubleshooting, follow-up on outstanding items and clearing of open items every month, and close within 15 days.
  • Ensures compliance with GAAP (IFRS a plus) and how to apply guidance to a nonprofit.
  • Develop and maintain finance and accounting systems and processes that meet the financial management needs of the organization.
  • Determination revenue recognition based on contract requirements, applying ASC606 and other revenue guidance.
  • Assists in the preparation of monthly, quarterly, and annual financials to be provided to management and investors.
  • Responsible for project start-up process from signing of donor agreement or contract through successful set up of codes, program folders and participation in project start up meeting.
  • Oversee the coordination with programs to ensure financial information related to grants are accurate, timely, and responsive to grant guidelines.
  • Lead, supervise, train and develop Accounting Unit.

Audits/taxes

  • Ensure reconciliations and schedules for audits are prepared in advance, gathering source documentation and coordinating testing as needed.
  • Respond to audit requests and organizing source documentation for audit.
  • Prepare schedules for tax preparation including oversight on expenditure responsibility forms.

Accounts Payable

  • Review and approve AP, employee reimbursements, credit card and cash reconciliations.
  • Approve vendor set up in the accounting system to ensure accurate and timely 1099’s at year end.
  • Assist program management with understanding accounts payable procedures, ensuring proper processes are followed for approvals.
  • Ensure the filing invoices and receipts is organized and continuously up to date.

Required Skills and Experience:

  • Possess sound judgment along with a high level of integrity, confidentiality, and dependability.
  • Demonstrated leadership ability, team management, relationship building, and interpersonal skills.
  • Requires BA in Accounting, Finance or Business Administration (with an emphasis in accounting or finance).
  • 7 to 10 years of professional experience managing accounting, budget, and financial reporting operations for non-profit organization.
  • Advanced knowledge of GAAP accounting rules (IFRS is a plus), nonprofit accounting, including fund and grant accounting, compliance, and reporting.
  • Experience in the design and maintenance of accounting and financial management systems, internal controls, finance policies and procedures development.
  • Ability to learn and to work independently as well as in a collegial manner, as a team player, is essential.
  • Exceptional time management and good organizational skills. Accuracy with numbers is necessary.
  • Analytical, critical thinking and innovative problem-solving skills with the ability to handle multiple tasks under tight deadlines and competing priorities.
  • Proficiency in Spanish and/or German is a plus.
  • Outstanding communication with demonstrated highly effective presentation and training skills.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Large ERP experience, Dynamics GP, Paycom, report writer software
  • Software implementation experience
  • CPA

Physical Work Demands:

  • Able to sit at a computer for extended periods of time.
  • Able to bend at the waist and reach on a daily basis.
  • Able to lift and move up to 25 lbs regularly.
