Description

Job Summary:

 

The Certified Athletic Trainer (CAT) reports directly to the overseeing Orthopedic Surgeon and Practice Manager. The CAT plays a crucial role in providing quality care to patients by accurately assessing, communicating, and managing the medical conditions of athletes. This position involves working closely with the physician to perform initial evaluations, provide rehabilitation guidance, and offer general patient education. The CAT also works with contracted high schools and colleges, providing care, assistance, and education on injured athletes during sporting events and beyond. Specializing in injury prevention, management, and recovery, the CAT collaborates with the overseeing provider to develop comprehensive treatment programs.

 

Key Responsibilities:

 

  • Think critically and make independent decisions regarding assessment, treatment, rehabilitation, and return-to-play decisions in accordance with state license guidelines.
  • Maintain meticulous attention to detail with injury tracking and documentation.
  • Communicate effectively in high-stress situations when interacting with patients, medical professionals, staff, and families.
  • Act as a liaison between primary care physicians, specialists, educational authorities, athletes, and their parents.
  • Provide coaches and athletic directors with lists of medically eligible athletes to compete under district and state rules and regulations.
  • Conduct education sessions for coaches, parents, and athletes on various sports medicine topics.
  • Perform triage, take patient histories, and complete medical records dictations under the supervision of an orthopedic surgeon.
  • Conduct thorough musculoskeletal evaluations and present findings to orthopedic surgeons and other specialists.
  • Maintain durable medical equipment fitting and provide instruction as needed.
  • Provide gait training, crutch fitting, and education on post-operative wound and dressing care.
  • Perform life and limb-saving treatment at the point of care, including acute spinal injury management on the field.

Qualifications


Education:

 

Bachelor’s Degree in Athletic Training or a Health-related field. (Required)

 

Experience:

 

Two or more years of job-related experience preferred but not required.

 

Licensure:

 

  • New York State Athletic Training Licensure. (Required)
  • Certification in Basic First Aid and CPR. (Required)

  • Strong critical thinking and decision-making skills.
  • Excellent communication skills, especially in high-pressure situations.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with medical professionals, coaches, athletes, and parents.
  • Proficiency in injury assessment, rehabilitation techniques, and patient education.
  • Attention to detail in injury tracking, documentation, and medical records management.
  • Ability to provide life-saving treatment and manage acute injuries effectively.
  • Familiarity with state regulations and guidelines related to athletic training and sports medicine.
  • Dedication to continuing education and staying updated on advances in sports medicine and injury management.

 

Physical Requirements:

 

  • Ability to stand for extended periods and perform physical tasks related to patient care.
  • Flexibility to work during sporting events, which may involve outdoor settings and varying weather conditions.
  • Capability to lift and move equipment and assist injured athletes as needed.
