What are the responsibilities and job description for the Lead Chef position at OPERATION: Sack Lunch?
OSL is celebrating 34 years of ending hunger one meal at a time for those struggling with food security in the greater Seattle area. We are hiring 4 competent chefs or cooks that have minimum of 3 to 5 years' experience in cooking from scratch. Additional experience in large batch and creative cooking a plus.
Base wage for fully experienced cooks meeting the criteria: $24 (annual COLA and merit increases), a generous leave package, up to $200 monthly towards transportation reimbursement, all meals, medical/dental, $250 bonus after 3 months’ successful employment, and an additional $250 after 6 months.
OSL has 5 fast-paced kitchens preparing meals for more than 68 shelter programs; a linchpin in the emergency meal system. OSL is on the cutting edge of food rescue, and is instrumental in building an equitable food system in Seattle and King County.
Desired Qualifications and Requirements:
- Strong work ethic
- Experience working in a fast-paced kitchen environment
- Comfortable producing 60 main course options independently without supervision or instruction
- Knowledge of scratch cooking including, gravy, béchamel, marinara, dressings, casseroles, stews, pasta dishes and several ways to cook chicken, beef, and fish
- Understanding of organic vs. conventionally grown ingredients, is helpful
- Understanding of nutrient density and meeting the daily nutritional requirements
- An ethical, amiable, and patient personality
- Committed interest in working for populations struggling with homelessness, mental illness, displacement, etc.
- Ability to lift 50 pounds repetitively, bending frequently and standing for long periods of time
- Current Food Handler’s card, (Serve Safe not required, but a plus)
- Eye for cleanliness and the ability to participate in kitchen upkeep;
- Driver's license with a clean driving record a plus but not required
