What are the responsibilities and job description for the Materials Scientist position at Optimal Inc.?
We are seeking a Materials scientist to develop a novel PEM MEA design. The scientist will be a core team member who will collaborate within the company and multiple external project partners (universities, industry, and national labs).
JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Work with multidisciplinary team of PEM fuel cell scientists and engineers, to develop and evaluate new design concepts for PEM membranes with proton selective transport property.
- Under a US Department of Energy (DOE) funded project, collaborate with the several academic, industrial partners, and external service providers.
- Conduct design of experiments to optimize membrane-electrode assembly (MEA) performance. Correlate material and electrochemical properties to MEA designs.
- Execute accelerated stress tests at 50cm2 single cell level.
- Perform electrochemical diagnostics and post-mortem analyses to understand performance and durability of the materials.
- Work with colleagues to apply performance and degradation models to understand experimental results and identify voltage loss factors.
- Attend regular team meetings with internal team and project partners. Play a proactive role in the project and enable meeting or exceeding the DOE target metrics for the performance and durability of the novel MEA design. Contribute to the quarterly and annual progress reports and presentations for the project.
REQUIREMENTS:
- Master's degree in Material Science, Chemistry, Chemical Engineering
- Minimum 2 years of working experience in fuel cells, batteries, electrochemistry required.
- Prefer PhD in Material Science, Chemistry, Chemical Engineering
- Working experience with fuel cell materials and systems, specific to membrane-electrode assembly and its subcomponents.
SKILLS/ABILITY:
- Hands on experience and demonstrated capability in electrochemical techniques.
- Hands on experience and demonstrated capability in materials development.
- Hands-on, independent, self-motivated contributor with strong problem-solving skills
- Strong organizational skills with a high level of attention to detail and interpersonal skills to work effectively with others.
- Communication: Strong oral, written and presentation skills.
- Prefer Experience in MEA fabrication and fuel cell testing capabilities.
- Prefer Experience with proton-exchange ionomer and membrane, graphene, or graphene oxide materials.
- Prefer Ability to judge data quality from materials analyses including TEM, SEM, EPMA, XRD, Raman, XPS, ICP, TGA etc.
