What are the responsibilities and job description for the Security Engineer 5 position at Oracle?

Job Description

Organization and Team

Oracle Cloud Infrastructure (OCI) is a top-five cloud provider of Iaas, PaaS, and SaaS products. The OCI Product Security team is responsible for making sure we deliver the highest level of security for Oracle customers of any cloud environment. Our scope includes the cloud platform itself, as well as the growing list of 200 services and products within the core OCI catalog. We work in partnership with product service teams to deliver robust, trustworthy cloud services and applications.

To enable our continued growth, OCI is expanding an internal consulting team of security experts who enable large projects, unblock complex security efforts, and lead the business in delivering on strategic security-centric business goals. This team is composed expert-level product security ICs (this type of role) paired with hands-on, experienced security technical program managers and analysts. The team uses a consulting-style engagement model to pave paths to improvement, and then drive those changes throughout Oracle's products.

This is a role for someone who loves to drop into teams of smart people struggling with hard problems and help design the path forward. This is a role for someone who knows when to prototype a solution themselves vs. driving a plan across set of teams. This is a role for someone who loves to help others, solve problems, make big security improvements, and loves moving between a diverse set of technical challenges.

Things you’ll do

  • Influence roadmaps, service designs, internal cloud security standards, and customer-facing products for OCI's global cloud infrastructure
  • Represent product security to internal development teams and senior leadership
  • Function as a de facto expert for product security decisions across Oracle’s cloud platform
  • Pull apart Cloud Services down to the nuts & bolts to understand how they work, how they can work better, and how they should be leveraged or extended to meet business goals
  • Work on a combination of 3-10 big projects a year or 5-20 small projects a year
  • Know when you should spend your time “hands on keyboard” vs. white-boarding solution (e.g. coding/prototyping vs. zoom/design work)
  • Collaborate with your teammates to collectively support security initiatives across 175 services and 10,000 developers in their mission to continuously “level up” security of service families and the OCI platform
  • Collaborate with service team’s architects to lend your security expertise to product design conversations and implementation decisions
  • Develop designs for how OCI will meet future security goals, support development of organization-wide plans for making it happen, and embed with teams as necessary to validate we’re doing the right things.
  • Periodically embed with service teams for 1-6 weeks to provide technical direction, answer questions, and guide teams to enable meeting security goals
  • Writing code to (for example): prototype ideas, demonstrate proof-of-concepts, extract and analyze data and intelligence from existing data sources to inform designs & decisions
  • Lead cross-functional tiger teams to solve complex problems

Qualifications:

  • Experience in design/architecture role for *aaS cloud services
  • Extensive experience securing large infrastructures
  • Bachelor’s degree, Master’s degree preferred, (or equivalent experience) in Computer Science or related field
  • 5 years of experience in security engineering or related field
  • Strong sense of ownership, urgency, and drive
  • Demonstrable teamwork skills and resourcefulness
  • Possess self-drive to keep moving things forward even in the face of ambiguity and imperfect knowledge (avoid “analysis paralysis”)
  • Sharp analytical abilities and proven design skills
  • Experience working in a large cloud or internet software company
  • Experience in multiple security domains, able to develop scalable solutions for complex business problems, including project leadership across multiple teams
  • Experience with multiple programming languages (such as, Java, C , Ruby, Python, Go, etc.)
  • Experience in several domains of security, with extensive depth in at least two.

OCI is a better place to work:

  • No in-office requirement – work from wherever you care to (we do try to get together at least once a year though - DEFCON is a past example)
  • Actual work/life balance – your life and/or family comes first for you and we respect that
  • Cross team collaboration – We work together and rely on cross-team trust to succeed
  • Lots of smart people to work with and learn from – We attract brilliant engineers, and we all learn from one another every day
  • Tons of impact – Oracle’s customers are diverse, and your day-to-day decisions will directly and indirectly improve the security and stability of companies and governments worldwide
  • Tons of influence - We work with people who know that good ideas come from all directions, and you should too
  • Experienced leadership – Our leaders and executives in OCI are smart, cloud-savvy, and accessible to you
  • Friendly, supportive, and welcoming team culture, and managers who are deeply committed to self-care and team sustainability
