Salary may be negotiable within the range listed above, based on position requirements and successful candidate's qualifications, subject to appropriate authorization.
In addition to performance-based merit increases, this position is scheduled to receive salary range increases on the following dates :
Effective June 28, 2024 - 4.25% increase
Effective June 27, 2025 - 4.00% increase

OC PUBLIC WORKS
OC Public Works (OCPW) provides services on a regional basis to unincorporated areas, cities, and other County agencies and departments.

AIRPORT MAINTENANCE DIVISION
The Maintenance Division's mission is to ensure safe, clean, and dependable facilities at JWA. The Division manages projects, contracts, maintenance, and general services focused on ensuring a superior guest experience, a safe and secure airport, and optimizing the useful life and reliability of JWA systems, equipment, and facilities in a proactive, cost-effective manner.
JWA Maintenance Division is a unit within the OCPW Department. The Division manages the Maintenance and Repair (M&R) of most of the County-owned and operated facilities, systems, and assets at the JWA, including approximately 3.
4 million square feet of building space spread over seventeen (17) Facilities on over 500 acres.
In addition to M&R, both through contracted and in-house resources, the Division provides Project Coordination for Public Works Projects at the Airport.
THE OPPORTUNITY
Trades Helpers are responsible for performing a variety of semiskilled tasks in repairing, maintaining, constructing, and remodeling County buildings, or to assist skilled crafts workers in remodeling buildings and repairing electrical, or HVAC equipment.
- Perform semiskilled work and assist journey-level craft workers in electrical, plumbing, HVAC, painting, and other trades
- Assist with maintenance, repair, and remodeling of both public and non-public areas
- Perform preventative maintenance on HVAC and other equipment
- Cut, thread, install pipe, and repair valves
- Use electrician hand tools to troubleshoot, replace, or repair lighting fixtures, small transformers, ballasts, relays, switches, minor wiring, and similar electrical components
- Incumbents may be given specific work assignments and be expected to complete a specific phase of a small remodeling or repair job with only a final check from the crafts worker or supervisor on the quality of work
- May operate light- to medium-sized equipment
- Complete other duties as assigned
WORK HOURS
This position requires a (4 / 10) Schedule; one weekend day per week. (Please note : days are subject to change). OCPW anticipates the schedule or shifts for positions filled with this recruitment will be similar to one of the following :
Day Shift : 5 : 00 A.M. - 3 : 30 P.M. (4-10's including one weekend day)
Swing Shift : 12 : 30 P.M. - 11 : 00 P.M. (4-10's including one weekend day)
Night Shift : 8 : 00 P.M. - 6 : 30 A.M. (4-10's including one weekend day)
LICENSE REQUIRED
The position requires a valid California Driver's License, Class C or higher.
DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS AND CORE COMPETENCIES
The ideal candidate will possess one (1) or more years of commercial and / or industrial facilities experience performing work at the semi-skilled level in combination with any of the following trades : electrical, plumbing, painting, equipment operation, and HVAC.
In addition to performing a variety of semiskilled tasks for Trades Helper, the successful candidate must possess the following core competencies.
Technical Knowledge & Experience
- Perform appropriate preventative maintenance on air conditioning, heating, electrical, and plumbing equipment
- Efficiently change / clean air filters, adjust drive belts, and lubricate bearings
- Operate hand & power tools and other light-to-medium-sized equipment utilized in the building trades in a safe manner
- Effectively maintain lighting fixtures, small transformers, and similar types of electrical components
- Use a Computerized Maintenance Management System (CMMS) to receive work orders, and track and document the completion of work
- Demonstrate integrity, expertise, and humility, with a desire for continuous improvement both individually and for the team
Industry / Safety Knowledge
- Perform safe work practices while operating tools & equipment
- Knowledge of properly securing equipment for transportation
- Extensive understanding of safety regulations & job site hazard identification
- Identify, report, and correct equipment problems in an efficient and timely manner
Communication Skills
- Understand and follow written and oral instructions, including work orders
- Actively listen to others for a full understanding of what is being communicated
- Accurately and concisely communicate with others
- Communicate technical information in a clear and concise manner
- Effectively communicate and convey ideas to others both orally and in writing
- Request clarification and additional information as needed to perform quality work
- Provide a high level of service and reliability for Airport guests & partners
- Maintain cooperative relationships with coworkers, and collaborate effectively across organizational lines, trades, and with internal and external customers

AIRPORT ACCESS REQUIREMENTS
Employees must clear a background check, which includes a Criminal History Records Check (CHRC), Transportation Security Administration (TSA) check, and Security Threat Assessment (STA) check.
Possession of, or ability to obtain, a valid Airport Access Badge with an Airport Driving Endorsement within ten (10) days of employment.
Airport Access Badge must be maintained and renewed every two (2) years.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
Incumbents may be required to utilize a face respirator for certain aspects of their job duties to protect against fumes, harmful respiratory contaminants, or particles.
Incumbents will need to be able to work in a moderate to heavy physical capacity while wearing the respirator. Incumbents will need to pass a respiratory equipment fit test with Orange County Employee Health to ensure proper sizing and protection.
Retesting may be required at regular intervals.
PHYSICAL, MENTAL, ENVIRONMENTAL, AND WORKING CONDITIONS
Physical and Mental Requirements
Manual dexterity to utilize a keyboard, operate hand tools, or other potentially hazardous equipment utilized in the building trades;
lift objects and various equipment up to 50 pounds. Eye-hand coordination. Vision to distinguish and identify colors and read standard text.
Independent body mobility to stand for long periods of time, climb ladders or scaffolding, bend, stoop, kneel, crawl, pull, or push.
Speak and hear well enough to communicate in person and over the radio or telephone. Sufficient cognitive ability to problem solve and perform job duties in a safe manner.
Environmental and Working Conditions
The position requires the incumbent to work inside and outside in a loud environment and drive in severe weather conditions.
Incumbents may be required to work inside a jail facility; the Coroner's facility; work in close proximity to inmates or psychiatric patients, work outside or drive in inclement weather conditions;
and may have exposure to steam, chemicals, and occasionally work in room temperatures of 90-100 degrees.
