Located in a remote, highly secure area of southern Nevada, the NNSS is a premier outdoor, indoor, and underground national laboratory. As the Senior Principal Fire Protection Engineer, you will provide Fire Protection engineering support to the Engineering Section. Support will include preparation of fire hazards analysis and fire protection assessments for multiple site facilities. Work will need to be completed in accordance with Nevada National Security Site’s (NNSS) procedures and Department of Energy (DOE) requirements.
Key Responsibilities:
- Devise solutions to highly complex technical problems of broad scope. Solutions may require resolving conflicting customer expectations and design requirements, utilizing unconventional technology and materials, and cross-disciplinary integration.
- Serve as consultant to less experienced engineers, providing practical advice on implementation of solutions for organizational goals.
- Serve as lead to scope projects and serve as subject matter expert for matters pertaining to fire protection engineering.
- Coordinate with subcontracted fire protection engineers to ensure work is cohesive and coordinated with rest of design team.
- Responsible for preparation and checking of design drawings, specifications, calculations, system design descriptions, design analyses, fire hazards analyses, fire protection assessments, equivalencies, and exemptions.
- Identify risk and design features to aid in preventing, controlling, and mitigating the effects of fire. Ability to perform hydraulic calculations with the assist of computer software such as Hydraulic Analyzer of Sprinkler Systems (HASS). Provide support to beneficial occupancy inspections as needed.
- Conduct or lead research; develop and design new instrumentation, equipment, and procedures for testing and solving problems; present papers and stay up-to-date of new technological developments, methods or materials, and keep management informed of important new advances.
- Ensure team’s processes and deliverables comply with laws, codes, orders, and Mission Support and Test Services’ LLC. (MSTS) policies and procedures. Research and interpretation of codes and standards and DOE’s orders and standards will be required on a daily occurrence.
- Ability to coordinate with multiple engineering disciplines as well as the Authority Having Jurisdiction, the Fire Marshal, facility managers, and project managers.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in an engineering program accredited by the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET) required for Civil, Mechanical and Electrical engineering degrees;
- Or, Calculus-based STEM bachelor’s degree in engineering
- Or Professional Engineer license
- Plus at least 14 years’ relevant experience. Skill building experience must demonstrate either deeper technical specialization or additional cross-disciplinary knowledge; graduate research experience may be recognized.
- Minimum 5 years’ experience in Department of Engineering complex working as Fire Protection Engineer preferred
- Minimum 3 years’ experience in Fire Hazards Analysis and Fire Protection Assessments for Nuclear Facilities preferred
- Must have a working knowledge of applicable National Fire Protection Association codes and standards, International Building Code, International Fire Code, DOE orders and standards, and Code of Federal Regulations.
- Must be a subject matter expert (SME) in fire suppression systems, fire alarm and detection systems, fire barrier design, and life safety design features.
- Pre-placement physical examination, which includes a drug screen, is required. MSTS maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing.
- Must have a valid driver's license.

- The primary work location will be at the Losee Road facility in North Las Vegas, Nevada.
- Work schedule for this position will be 4/10’s, Monday – Thursday (subject to change).
