The Department of Integrative Biology is seeking a Lead Academic Advisor. This is a full-time 1.00 FTE, 12-month, professional faculty position.
The Lead Academic Advisor will coordinate the IB advising team, perform academic advising and program support for the Ecampus (online program) students in the Zoology major as well as for the Zoology and Biology majors on the Corvallis campus. This includes Marine Biology and Pre-Veterinary Medicine option students in the Biology major. This position will also participate in School of Life Sciences and College of Science recruitment and retention efforts and represent the College of Science at recruitment events.

The Department of Integrative Biology is part of the School of Life Sciences and receives support for its academic program from the College of Science. In addition to the faculty’s activities in research and service, it has teaching responsibilities in nearly every undergraduate major at Oregon State University (OSU). The department has developed an internationally
recognized graduate program in conservation and evolutionary biology and marine ecology with faculty working in these areas at the level of the cell, organism and community.

20% – Integrative Biology Academic Advising Leadership
- Lead a team of advisors, collaborate faculty and staff to summarize and evaluate advising and student success issues and communicate with the Integrative Biology (IB), College of Science (COS) or other Oregon State University (OSU) representatives or leadership on the Cascades, Corvallis, Ecampus or Hatfield Marine Science Center campuses as appropriate. Participate in the Academic Advising Council (AAC) and cross-campus initiatives and committees as needed.
- Collaborate with Coordinator of Undergraduate Student Engagement (CUSE) and the Director of Undergraduate Studies (DUS) about advising issues, concerns, coordination, etc.
- Lead weekly advising team meetings related to advisor training and updates.
15% – Integrative Biology Academic Advising Coordination and Training
- Coordinate training of Integrative Biology advisors to support Corvallis and Ecampus Biology and Zoology majors. Provide supplemental advisor training to Cascades advisors supporting the Biology major as appropriate.
- Coordinate process, content and advising related to Corvallis START and Ecampus orientations.
- Coordinate advisor and student participation in student recruitment activities such as Beaver Open House, Fall and Spring Visits and occasional college fairs. In-state and out-of-state travel will be required to attend recruitment events as needed.
- Coordinate coverage of prospective student visits and respond to prospective student and parent emails and phone calls.
- Coordinate proactive advising efforts related to student success.
- Review and clear candidates for graduation and coordinate advisor response to graduation issues.
- Coordinate transition of students changing major to Biology or Zoology.
- Coordinate advising coverage during team illness, transitions or training.
35% – Academic Advising:
- Provides academic advising for Biology and Zoology majors within the Department of Integrative Biology. This includes advising for baccalaureate core and majors requirements as well as career advising.
- Advise new students at START each term.
- Assist with Ecampus orientation, articulation and advising.
- Advise students who are undecided or unclear which career areas they are pursuing.
- Assist College of Science students with general requests such as change of major forms, petitions, referrals to appropriate services.
- Assist students seeking reinstatement after suspension from the University.
- Write letters of recommendation for students as appropriate.
20% – Integrative Biology Student Services Coordination and Program Support
- Coordinate development of student services policies and exceptions where appropriate
- Oversee design and development of advising materials such as advising guides, websites, etc.
- Coordinate and consult with advisors and teaching faculty dealing with student issues and provide connections to outreach and referrals as appropriate.
- Support development of appropriate career resources and professional development opportunities for Biology and Zoology majors.
- Approve coursework for transfer students or students changing major to Biology or Zoology and coordinate appropriate MyDegrees exceptions.
- Serve as liaison to the Cascades campus, Corvallis campus and Ecampus on advising and student services issues.
- Coordinate College of Science scholarship review process.
- Coordinate advisor support of Integrative Biology Club and participation in club activities as appropriate.
- Coordinate with instructor the participation of advising team in BI 197 and 198 professional development courses and participate as appropriate.
- Collaborate with CUSE, DUS, office staff on student services and programmatic issues.
- Coordinate student communications and outreach through the listserv and other modes.
10% – Other:
- Participate in faculty meetings and departmental, School of Life Science (SLS) and College of Science duties as assigned by the Department Head of Integrative Biology.
- Represent IB on University committees as appropriate.
- Support SLS or COS student initiatives related to curriculum, experiential learning or student success.
- Pursue professional development opportunities as appropriate.
- Promote and support diversity in Integrative Biology programs.
- Other duties as assigned.
- Bachelor’s degree in a life science field or a Bachelor’s degree from any field plus two years relevant professional life science experience.
- One year of experience in college or university academic advising, or student support, or teaching/counseling of post-secondary/adult individuals. One year of demonstrated experience in leadership, teamwork and organized planning or problem-solving.
- Demonstrable experience supporting diverse populations coming from historically excluded groups, such as racial and ethnic, gender diverse, minoritized sexual identities, abilities, disability, veteran statuses, and socioeconomic levels.
- Ability to communicate clearly with a diverse group of students and staff through written (electronic and other) and oral communication.
- Ability to maintain confidential, detailed, and accurate student records.
- Strong interpersonal skills, demonstrated through working effectively with teams and students.

- Lead or supervisory experience.
- Work experience in ecology, biology, animal biology/zoology or related field.
- Master’s degree in life science or student services related area or other graduate level training in relevant field.
- Employment as a professional academic advisor in a college or university setting for more than 3 years full time.
- Experience with student information system and technology, such as but not limited to Web for Advisors, MyDegrees, Ellucian Banner and CORE.
- Experience working with transfer students and assessing articulations from other institutions.
- Experience working with students and campus partners in helping students navigate career pathways and opportunities.
Provides assistance with tours, recruitment and/or marketing events at various locations as needed. Some evening and weekend work is required. In-state and out-of-state travel is required.
