Position Summary
This recruitment will be used to fill two part-time (a maximum of 24 hours per week) Port Orford Field Station student worker for the Agricultural Sciences and Marine Sciences at Oregon State University (OSU).

The Marine Reserve Interpretation Intern is a combination of field scientist, science communicator, and marine reserve interpreter. In 2024, the Redfish Rocks Team will highlight the future of marine stewardship at the Redfish Rocks Marine Reserve and Marine Protected Area through our outreach and education program and expand our program reach to the recently designated Marine Research Area at Cape Blanco and Marine Conservation Area at Blacklock Point. The Marine Reserve Interpretation Intern will join the Redfish Rocks Team to support these efforts alongside two additional summer undergraduate interns and a local high school intern. Together, they will work with team leader Caroline Rice to complete our outreach and education goals.

As a marine reserve interpreter, the intern will communicate the story of the Redfish Rocks Marine Reserve and the importance of collaboration with the fishing community to visitors of Port Orford. As a field scientist and science communicator, the intern will be responsible for developing an independent research project including: collecting data, compiling these data into a report, and presenting results at the annual State of the Coast Conference with the support of Caroline and Tom Calvanese as mentors. The intern will also recruit volunteers for community science programs with partner agencies such as Coast Watch, COASST, and the Marine Mammal Stranding Network, and will be part of the team sampling juvenile fishes as part of an OSU/ODFW long term monitoring collaboration at Redfish Rocks. Additional opportunities to participate in field research and monitoring activities will arise during the internship as well.

Position Duties
50% Marine Reserve Interpretation at the Port Orford Visitor Center and other locations
  • Complete a marine reserve interpretation training
  • A total of 6 weeks at the Port Orford Visitor Center and other appropriate locations communicating information to the public about the Redfish Rocks Marine Reserve and Marine Protected Area, the
  • Cape Blanco Marine Research Area, and the Blacklock Point Marine Conservation Area as part of a team.
  • Coordinate and execute the annual “Redfish Rocks on the Dock” community event as part of a team.
40% Conduct an independent scholarly research project to present at a conference.
  • Develop independent research project associated with juvenile fish recruitment monitoring at Redfish Rocks using SMURFs (Standardized Monitoring Units for the Recruitment of Fishes), or other relevant research.

10% Contribute to communication efforts about the Redfish Rocks Marine Reserve and Marine Protected Area, The Cape Blanco Marine Research Area, and the Blacklock Point Marine Conservation Area.
  • Attend Monthly Port of Port Orford Commission Meetings to learn about local commercial fishing and operations.
  • Interview 2 local fishermen about their experience with the Redfish Rocks Marine Reserve and Marine Protected Area
  • Attend meetings of the Redfish Rocks Team, Community Advisory Committee, OMRP, and other relevant groups, as needed.
  • Coordinate with Redfish Rocks Team and ODFW’s Marine Reserve Program to ensure consistent messages.
  • Use Port Orford Field Station and Redfish Rocks Team social media platforms for outreach and education efforts.

  • Must be academically enrolled in a high school, community college, or university and pursuing a program or course of study
  • Must meet Academic Standing Requirements; students on academic suspension are not eligible for employment
  • Must meet the applicable minimal enrollment standard
    • High School student: Regularly enrolled in a high school or participating in a home-schooling program
    • Undergraduate and post-baccalaureate student: 6 credit hours per term
    • Undergraduate international student: 12 credit hours per term*
    • Graduate student officially admitted to Graduate School: 5 credit hours per term
    • Graduate international student officially admitted to Graduate School: 9 credit hours per term*


  • International students may be allowed to carry fewer hours than specified above and still be considered “full-time” by the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS). A reduced course load is approved by the Office of International Services (OIS), and must be provided to the Student Employment Center.
