Position Summary
This recruitment will be used to fill one part-time (a maximum of 24 hours per week) Temporary Fisheries Technician for the Fisheries and Wildlife at Oregon State University (OSU).

Seeking full time temporary technician for 10 weeks in late summer to assist data collection for Independence Valley speckled dace and other fish species in airidland wetlands in north central Nevada. The project, in collaboration with state and federal agencies, focuses on developing protocols, sample designs, and evaluating future monitoring techniques using traditional trapping methods and environmental DNA (eDNA).

Position Duties
  • Sampling airland wetland environment using Gee minnow traps and collecting eDNA samples.
  • Identifying, handling, and tagging (i.e., fin clipping and VIE) sensitive species.
  • Processing water for laboratory evaluation of eDNA.
  • Efficiently and accurately entering field data into Excel.
  • Maintaining sampling equipment.
  • Driving long distances, working in remote locations, and adapting to harsh unpredictable weather conditions

  • Must be academically enrolled in a high school, community college, or university and pursuing a program or course of study
  • Must meet Academic Standing Requirements; students on academic suspension are not eligible for employment
  • Must meet the applicable minimal enrollment standard
    • High School student: Regularly enrolled in a high school or participating in a home-schooling program
    • Undergraduate and post-baccalaureate student: 6 credit hours per term
    • Undergraduate international student: 12 credit hours per term*
    • Graduate student officially admitted to Graduate School: 5 credit hours per term
    • Graduate international student officially admitted to Graduate School: 9 credit hours per term*


  • International students may be allowed to carry fewer hours than specified above and still be considered “full-time” by the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS). A reduced course load is approved by the Office of International Services (OIS), and must be provided to the Student Employment Center.

Additional Required Qualifications
Must possess a valid US drivers license

Preferred (Special) Qualifications
  • Previous experience with field data collection, ideally with aquatic species research.
  • Proficient in data entry and attention to detail for accurate record-keeping.
  • Knowledge of fish identification.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with state/federal agencies and as a team.
  • Completed or pursuing a fish/wildlife sciences, ecological restoration, conservation, or other natural resource degree.
  • Wilderness first aid and CPR training
  • Ability to camp for up to 7 days at a time, work long hours, and be flexible.
