General Summary of Purpose:

The Art Director is responsible for brainstorming ideas, conceptualizing projects, giving photography direction, designing catalog pages, covers, e-mail campaigns, and direct mail projects that are based on company objectives and are reflective of the OTC brand. This includes catalogs, ad campaigns, website promotions, special flyers, tradeshow displays, collateral materials and package design.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities:

Essential Functions

• Brainstorms and concepts design for jobs, including covers, catalog pages, e-mail campaigns, alternative media, direct mail, magazine ads, logos, packaging, tradeshow signage, collateral materials website features, media kits, public relations projects, special projects and new initiatives across all pertinent channels. Ensures overall campaign maintains consistent elements including layout design, imagery, headline treatments, graphic elements and typefaces.
• Ensures concepts and all design projects are in line with brand guidelines and company objectives.
• Partners with team of production designers, graphic designers, MMS, copywriters, QA, creative coordinators and traffic in meeting or exceeding all goals and deadlines. Works closely with all related departments with in the company to ensure the brand standards are met.
• Writes photo notes, selects and/or approves models and directs photo shoots for covers and features. Works with in-house studio as well as outside studio and freelance photographers and stylists to set overall photography standards for projects at hand. Approves final photography, providing timely and constructive feedback.
• Attends planning, strategy and product review meetings to create the most relevant customer solution.
• Ensures all files created are technically sound and ready for the next step.
• Trains, guides, mentors and supports teammates on specifications and processes relevant to each unique catalog.
• Accurately logs time on a daily basis.
• Maintains regular and predictable attendance.
• Abides by all policies and procedures of Oriental Trading Company.
• Must be able to attend face to face meetings on short or little advance notice.
• Work requires in-person collaboration among colleagues and contractors.

Marginal Functions

• Performs other related duties and projects as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Education

• Bachelor’s degree in Graphic Design, Advertising, related field or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Experience

• Requires a minimum of two years experience in design; advertising agency, catalog and/or direct mail design.
• Experience in photography direction and approval and print production and web design experience preferred.

Other Qualifications and Physical Requirement

• Ability to work with a high level of independence and creativity within the pressure of deadlines.
• Excellent organizational, communication and time management skills.
• Proficient in Macintosh environment using InDesign, PhotoShop, and Illustrator.
• A high level of artistic ability & design with good color perception and sensitivity to type is essential.
• Ability to multi task and adapt well to change and input from others.
• Ability to solve problems.
• Ability to work with a team of creative professionals.
• Knowledge of pre-press and print production
• Flexible and willing to work additional hours to maintain schedules.

Equipment Utilization

Macintosh computers and various printing devices, both color and black and white. Art materials and other tools also utilized.

Description of Working Conditions

Work takes place in a typical office environment that may require sitting for extended periods of time and/or frequent use of finger dexterity.
