Job Title: Referral Coordinator

Type: Full-Time

Position Overview

The Referral Coordinator represents the Patient Services Department by making outbound referral phone calls to referring practices and patients for scheduling. These individuals coordinate the scheduling of patient appointments from referrals and PCP offices/requests. This role relies on experience and the knowledge of organizational best practices to identify patient/physician alignment and facilitates leadership knowledge in understanding insurance benefits, eligibility, and required referrals, as well as successfully obtaining required insurance referrals or explaining self-pay policies to patients.

The duties listed here are in addition to the Referral Coordinator's customary duties in their position at Orthopedic Associates of Lancaster.

Essential Job Functions

  • Receive and call all incoming and outbound referrals, as well as getting the patient scheduled appropriately.
  • Referrals can come through faxes, online appointment requests, phone calls, EMR work queue.
  • Schedule patient appointments according to protocols established by the Organization.
  • Collect all demographic, guarantor and subscriber information from the patient to ensure the necessary information is gathered to verify eligibility and benefits.
  • Verify insurance benefits and eligibility for all patients according to protocols established by the Organization.
  • Responsible for ensuring that a patient's insurance allows them to access the services of the specialist's health care provider.
  • This needs to happen before the appointment to make sure we can contact patient as needed to seek clarification and/or discuss benefits with the patient. Call patients on benefit verification concerns to include, but not limited by, high deductibles, non-covered services, or no coverage. For all self-pay patients clearly indicate the OAL policy and implications of appointment cancellation if not prepared to pay balance at time of service.
  • Responsible for aiding in the positive motivation of employees.
  • Responsible for positive inter-departmental communication.
  • Ensures that any issues that arise that have the potential of affecting the entire department are effectively communicated in a consistent manner to ensure that all team members receive the same information.

Qualifications


Required Education and Experience:

  • High school diploma/GED is required.
  • At least one (1) year of experience using Microsoft office applications such as Word & Excel.
  • Current experience or the ability to learn how to use fax machines, postage meters, and printers.

Preferred Education and Experience:

  • The ideal candidate will have excellent communication skills (both written and oral).
  • At least one (1) year of experience in the Patient Services department.
  • At least one (1) year of Medical Background is preferred.
  • At least one (1) year of EMR Experience is preferred.
  • An Associate's degree or higher is preferred.
