What are the responsibilities and job description for the Head Athletic Trainer position at Orthopedic One?

This position requires in-state and domestic business travel and weekend work.

 

Position Summary:  The Head Athletic Trainer is the healthcare provider who will manage the day-to-day sports medicine operations for all Columbus Fury athletes through a contract with Orthopedic ONE. The HAT applies scientific knowledge to provide injury prevention strategies, evaluation, treatment, and rehabilitation of injuries. The HAT will be an integral part of a multidisciplinary performance team creating a world-class experience. This individual will work under the direction of the Director of Physical Therapy and Sports (DPT& SM) and Chief Medical Officer (CMO). Duties include providing medical care to athletes and technical staff, design and implementation of injury prevention strategies, develop treatment and rehabilitation protocols, keep up to date medical records, and department communication lead for all medical stakeholders.

Responsibilities/Accountabilities:

Team Head Athletic Trainer  

  1. Direction and leadership of medical department and all staffing stakeholders including, but not limited to: assistant athletic trainers, massage therapists, interns and other medical consultants.
  2. Manage healthcare of athletes and technical staff including, but not limited to: first aid/emergency care, on-site injury evaluation, application of appropriate modalities, develop and implement rehabilitation and prevention programs, and making appropriate medical referrals.
  3. Develop and integrate treatment and rehabilitation protocols
  4. Demonstrate interpersonal skills required to work effectively with players, coaches, and other team personnel and league staff.
  5. Communicate with the other members of the performance department regarding injured and/or rehabilitating players to modify and individualize programs.
  6. Maintain and work with club and league technologies and platforms as required
  7. Maintain up to date player health and participation records through league provided electronic medical record (EMR) system.
  8. Electronically document accurate first report of injury, physician diagnosis, player assessments, player treatments, and return to play dates.
  9. Maintain appropriate pharmaceutical inventory and records.
  10. Initiate insurance/worker’s compensation claims for players.
  11. Organize and execute entrance and exit physical examinations as required by the League.
  12. Creation of weekly/monthly reports for various stakeholders as required.
  13. Develop resources to support educational efforts regarding player health and safety.
  14. Remain current with the latest medical scientific research and translate this to policy and practice.
  15. Order, inventory, and procurement of goods through necessary vendors.
  16. Comply with all league medical policies, protocol and Game Operations Manuals.
  17. Comply with OSHA standards regarding blood-borne pathogens.
  18. Attend all activities/meetings/programs as required by the League, the Club, and Orthopedic ONE
  19. Work under the direction of the DPT&SM and CMO.

Outreach:

  1. Provides emergency response for athletic injuries and performs first aid. Conducts orthopedic and neurological injury evaluation. Provides orthopedic and neurological injury management
  2. Makes referrals of orthopedic and neurological injury to appropriate providers/MD including scheduling patients for MSK care within Orthopedic ONE.
  3. Communicates with prospective patients about MSK services provided at Orthopedic ONE.

Patient Care:

  1. Assists physical therapists with exercise programs and patient treatments.
  2. Performs rehabilitative modalities under physical therapists’ supervision.
  3. Develops strength training and/or conditioning programs for athletes/patients.
  4. Instructs and counsels patients regarding compliance with prescribed therapeutic regimens and health maintenance.
  5. Delivers patient care in a manner consistent with NATABOC and State of Ohio AT and PT Board Practice acts while under the supervision of a physical therapist.
  6. Following the Orthopedic One Contagious Disease Symptom and Screening P&P, provides screening of Orthopedic One patients, visitors, and/or associates as assigned. These tasks may include, but are not limited to, completing symptom screening form, taking vitals such as temperature checks, dispensing recommended personal protective equipment, facilitating communication and coordination of care with provider input, and associated cleaning and disinfecting equipment and work spaces.

Clinical Support:

  1. Takes inventory of supplies and stocks supplies, equipment and linens. Alerts PT Director to purchasing and equipment repair needs.
  2. Maintains a clean and safe clinical environment.
  3. Coordinates maintenance and upkeep of gym/therapy equipment and maintains related documentation for these tasks.
  4. Assists director in the development and presentation of lectures, clinics and athletic screening programs.
  5. Performs administrative functions as assigned by director.

Teamwork:

  1. Works cooperatively with coworkers, providers, and management.
  2. Shares knowledge and insights with co-workers in a constructive manner.
  3. Willingly provides coverage to department, staying beyond scheduled ending time when clinic schedule demands it, volunteering to cover time off or unexpected absences, maintaining workflow in department without direct supervision.
  4. Addresses conflicts with person directly before involving manager or uninvolved peers.
  5. Is considerate of others with regard to taking breaks or meal periods, use of computer and telephone, and noise in department.

 

Policies and Procedures:

  1. Knows and complies with policies and procedures as enumerated in the Orthopedic One Employee Handbook and policies and procedures documents.
  2. Provides assistance and support to leadership in implementing policies and procedures as necessary.
  3. Actively participates in training, and conducting day to day work activity by adhering to all policies and procedures as enumerated in compliance and risk management programs.

Education, Experience, and Certification/Licensure Required:

Qualified candidates must have a Bachelor’s Degree in Athletic Training or related field, a Master’s degree is preferred, current certification by the National Athletic Trainers’ Association Board of Certification, NATABOC, and at least five (5) years of work experience, preferably working with professional level athletes. Candidates must have current Ohio License as an Athletic Trainer and current CPR certification including BLS/AED training for health care provider. CSCS, PES, and LMT certification/licensure preferred.  Experience in volleyball is preferred.  Candidates must have previous experience in MS Office suite including Outlook, Excel and PowerPoint. Candidates must demonstrate effective communication and organizational skills and experience working in a collaborative professional environment is essential.
