Under general supervision, the purpose of the position is to perform specialized work involving mosquito control operations. Employees function at journey level and are responsible for field inspection of mosquito breeding sites and exercise judgment in control techniques and treatment to be applied. Although the employee works independently and is often physically removed from supervision, duties are performed within the framework of pre-established policies and procedures. Employee is distinguished from that of the entry level position by knowledge and proficiency gained through training and experience.

  • Conducts systematic daily checks of assigned areas in the County to locate noxious arthropod breeding areas.
  • Identify breeding problems and exercise good judgment in selecting appropriate control technique and/or treatment.
  • Applies insecticides and chemicals according to procedure in order to maximize the coverage of the area while ensuring compliance with all applicable Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), State and County regulations and policies governing the application of pesticides.
  • Utilizes specialized techniques such as light traps to capture adult mosquitoes; records landing rate counts.
  • Reads and interprets a variety of instructions maps, diagrams, or schedules to determine appropriate spraying locations.
  • Operates spray truck, as needed, with heightened awareness to pedestrian and traffic conditions, and in accordance with traffic laws, ordinances, and safe driving practices, for the safe distribution of mosquito control chemicals and insecticides in designated County areas.
  • Sprays only during appropriate weather conditions to ensure localized and lasting distribution.
  • Capable of performing ULV related daytime work, including inspection of trucks and spray equipment for proper operation, mechanical, and/or other problems prior to spraying, calibration, and repair; reports any mechanical problems; may fabricate special equipment for mosquito control.
  • Cleans and maintains spray truck and equipment; flushes the spray system after each shift.
  • Performs all duties within the framework of pre-established safety policies and procedures.
  • Disposes of chemicals, biological agents, and hazardous materials in accordance with prescribed safety policies and environmental procedures; maintains cleanliness of facilities and equipment; maintains inventory of materials.
  • Receives telephone inquiries and concerns, ascertains the nature of the call, and resolves personally, directs to the appropriate individual or department, or acts as liaison to the assigned supervisor.
  • Performs a variety of routine clerical functions, e.g., completes reports of spraying assignments.
  • Performs duties as assigned/necessary which are related, or logical in assignment to the position, and in support of Natural Resources functions and objectives.

Education: High School Diploma or GED.

Experience: One (1) year of mosquito control experience or an equivalent combination of education, certification, training and/or experience.

Miscellaneous: 

  • Must possess and maintain a valid Florida Driver's License. 

  • Must possess a valid Public Health Pest Control Certification by the State of Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services or obtain certification within six (6) months of employment. 

  • Must possess forklift certification or obtain certification within six (6) months of employment.

  • Ability to understand and follow written and oral instructions.
  • Ability to read and write English.
  • Knowledge of office procedures and equipment; knowledge of clerical and secretarial support functions.
  • Knowledge of Federal, State, and local regulations pertaining to mosquito/pest control chemical distribution and safety procedures; ability to learn environmental regulations.
  • Knowledge of computer software applications, such as Microsoft Word and Excel, and ability to learn specialized computerized monitoring equipment/systems.
  • Knowledge of basic knowledge of chemical distribution and their proper storage; ability to learn and adhere to proper safety procedures.
  • Knowledge of the operation of light equipment (i.e., backpack sprayers, blowers and spray trucks with heightened awareness to pedestrian and traffic conditions.
  • Ability to safely operate all-terrain vehicles and forklift.
  • Ability to work independently to carry out assignments to completion; ability to adhere to pre-established safety policies, practices and procedures.
  • Ability to perform duties with a professional and cooperative work ethic.
  • Ability to perform work requiring strength and dexterity; ability to perform work for extended periods of time while standing; ability to with stand exposure to dust, mold and various chemicals.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relations with management, employees, other departments, officials and the general public, knowledge of the principles and techniques of customer service skills.
  • Ability to operate basic office equipment e.g., computer terminals, printers, copy machines, telephone systems, facsimile machines.
  • Ability to read, update and maintain various records and files, knowledge of administrative support functions, e.g., records maintenance, data analysis, reports processing, documentation proofing.
 Physical Demand: Heavy
  • 100 pounds maximum lifting.
  • Frequent (up to 2/3 of the work time) lifting, carrying up to 50 lbs.
  • Expressing or exchanging ideas by spoken word or perceiving sound by ear.
  • Good eyesight for production or safety of self and others.
  • Physical demand requirements are in excess of medium work.
