POSITION SUMMARY:The Medical American Sign Language (ASL) Interpreter performs American Sign Language interpreting for patients and their families, care providers, and all OSF staff in a variety of health care settings using accurate ASL medical terminology and interpreter ethics. The Interpreter also serves as a resource to connect patients and families and the care team with appropriate resources for Deaf and Hard of Hearing. The Interpreter will assess and monitor patient understanding of information conveyed and acts as an assistive services liaison between ASL speaking patients and OSF staff. In addition, the Interpreter assists the program with daily operations such as scheduling assistive service accommodations, processing assistive services invoices, and maintaining assistive services resource inventories and databases; such as recording and reporting of interpreter services including those from vendor partners, completing in-take and scheduling of interpreter services requests utilizing electronic medical record work queues, and responding to emails and phone calls.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
Education:High School/GED
Other Licenses/Certifications: Completion of Registry Interpreters for the Deaf (RID) Certificate, within 18 months of hireIllinois Deaf and Hard of Hearing Commission (IDHHC) Interpreter Licensure at Masters or Advanced Level, within 18 months of hire
Experience: 2 years of experience interpreting for American Sign Language (ASL) speaking persons
Other skills/knowledge:Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
