Position summary:
Plan the overall nutrition services in accordance with USDA Food & Nutrition Service (FNS) Women, Infant & Children Program (WIC) for the Otoe-Missouria Tribe WIC Program.
Essential Functions:
- Plans the state’s overall nutrition services, involving:
- Identifies nutrition education goals and objectives.
- Develops and implements procedures to ensure that nutrition education is offered to all participants.
- Establishes standards for participant contacts.
- Identifies or develops nutrition education resources and materials for use in local agencies.
- Describes the methods that will be used to provide drug and other harmful substance abuse information.
- Describes methods to meet the special nutrition education needs of migrants, Native Americans, and homeless persons.
- Identifies the State’s WIC approved foods.
- Monitors local agency activities for compliance with Federal requirements for nutrition education.
- Provides technical assistance and consultation to agency staff and other health and nutrition services topics.
- Provides in-service training and technical assistance for staff involved in providing nutrition education to participants.
- Develops and evaluates the State nutrition services plan.
- Develops State policies, procedures, or guidelines that pertain to nutrition services (e.g. nutrition assessment, nutrition education, food package prescriptions, and job descriptions).
- Supervises other State nutrition services staff, including the State Breastfeeding Promotion Coordinator.
- Participates in the development, management and implementation of the State nutrition services budget to ensure that at least 1/6 of the administrative budget is expended on nutrition education.
- Analyzes and comments on proposed policy or legislation that has potential impact on WIC nutrition services.
- Coordinates nutrition services with other internal WIC Program operations and external agencies/programs.
- Provides technical nutrition support in the development and revisions or State automated systems.
- Provide training for Nutrition Assistants when needed.
- Fill in for Nutrition Assistants at WIC Clinic sites when needed.
- Counsel high risk participants and provide appropriate literature and guidance as may be required.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relations with others.
- Skill in communicating ideas in writing and orally.
Educational /Experience Requirements:
Minimum Requirements:
- Bachelors degree required in the field of nutrition from an accredited college or university; with an emphasis in food and nutrition, public health nutrition, community nutrition, nutrition education, human nutrition, nutrition science or equivalent and have at least three years of responsible experience as a nutritionist in education, social service, maternal and child health, public health nutrition or dietetics.
- Credentialed as a Register Dietitian (R.D.); and State licensed as a nutritionist/dietitian or eligible for registration with the American Dietetic Association.
Preferred Educational/Experience:
- Masters Degree preferred. Prefer previous job-related experience in the field of dietetics and/or a WIC agency.
