Otterbein University seeks a Director of Risk Management who will report to the Vice President for Business Affairs. This is a full-time, exempt position.

POSITION SUMMARY

The Director of Risk Management directs administration of University’s risk management and loss control program, including risk associated with environmental health and safety and contract administration; oversees the University’s insurance portfolio; and provides support for other business services. The Risk Management Director provides a framework that promotes a deliberate, coordinated, and anticipatory approach to risk identification, evaluation, and management, and serves all Otterbein University faculty and staff, with a responsibility to identify and manage the strategic, operational, safety, financial, reputational, and legal risks associated with their activities.

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES

Risk Management, Insurance Program Management & Analysis
Administers the Risk Management program on a day-to-day basis in collaboration with other University divisions to: manage and analyze loss data, develop and provide training and education programs on general University risk management; comply with outside regulatory agencies; coordinate the management of claims for professional and general liability risks; develop policies and procedures; interface with legal counsel as appropriate.

Supervises the Environmental Health and Safety Officer; coordinates and directs (as appropriate) remedial action when a hazardous condition develops; promotes preventive measures to ensure safety of all University personnel, students, and visitors. Assists with the implementation of the University Enterprise Risk Management (ERM) initiative and serve on various campus committees and workgroups (as appropriate).

Provides timely responses to University personnel on various insurance matters concerning on- and off-campus activities, group events and travel, professional liability and specialized programs such as Equine and Nursing. Acts as liaison between the University and its insurance company for non-routine insurance matters.

Coordinates preparation of annual insurance questionnaires for underwriting and renewals.

Analyzes and recommends appropriate insurance coverage to mitigate risk and manage costs.

Contract Management
Provides timely responses to University personnel regarding contracts to be issued between the University and third parties. Works with individuals on campus to review all contracts (including vendors, trade contractors, grants, personnel agreements, third-party service providers, etc.) to insure appropriate risk management provisions exist to protect the University’s interests. Prepares final contracts to be signed by the President or Vice President for Business Affairs of the University using designated contract software, Axxerion.

Reviews contracts as necessary or as required by the Vice President for Business Affairs for conformance to University needs and objectives. Maintains records of University contracts for terms and conditions, expiration or renewal dates, and reports such information to University management. Serves as administrator for contract management technology, Axxerion.

Support for Other Business Services
Assists the Vice President for Business Affairs with the development of standard business tools, policies, procedures and practices to support the administrative efforts of various University divisions.

Recommends and implements business process improvement strategies through the engagement of various University divisions and representatives.

Develops and implements standard purchasing procedures; and determines purchasing processes in line with University’s written policy/procedures and implements necessary systems to be used in carrying out those activities.

Assists divisions as necessary with securing and analyzing quotations, negotiates prices and terms with suppliers, and recommends suppliers with respect to cost, quality, and delivery competitiveness. Assists with development of requests for proposals.

Recommends departmental procedures, practices, and the optimal sequence of operations to generate cost savings and quality of purchases throughout the institution.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES: Environmental Health and Safety Officer and/or temporary personnel.

QUALIFICATIONS

REQUIRED EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE:
Bachelor’s degree required with major coursework in business administration or comparable area of study,
Three years of risk management or commercial insurance experience.
Three years of experience in contract analysis, negotiation and management.
Knowledge of standard and best practices in purchasing.
Finance oriented education or experience.

PREFERRED
EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE :
Master’s degree
Experience with business process reengineering and project management highly preferred.
Certification or designation in procurement and risk management (i.e. ARM, CPCU)
