Position Title:RN - Registered Nurse - Vascular Access - PRN

Department:Adult PICC

Job Description:

OU Health's Vascular Access Department is growing as the new state-of-the-art adult patient tower has opened. This department boasts a fast-paced environment providing care to patients in various stages of their health care needs. On average the department does 400 to 500 lines a month. RNs in this department have large support from both Care Team Associates and Health Unit Coordinators. The Vascular Access Nurse's and APP's (Advance Practice Providers) work in teams to provide high quality line care.

* Procedures include difficult IV Sticks, EPIV's, Midlines, PICC, Lab Draws when starting lines and a full patient assessment before line is inserted to help decrease CLABSI rates. This role include consulting to look at and change dressings when appropriate and education for those on the unit that may be unfamiliar with line care and type of line.

* This position is hands on and research oriented. Must be able to work as a team.

General Description:

Under general supervision, provides PICC Line Placement and Infusion education in the PICC program.

Essential Responsibilities:

  • Consults on special patient cases where a need for PICC (Peripherally Inserted Central Catheter) Line placement and instruction has been identified
  • Establishes a treatment plan for patients and their families to follow
  • Serves as a resource person for medical and hospital staff regarding PICC placement and education. Consults with healthcare team on complication management
  • Assumes responsibility for an assigned group of patients
  • Documents patient responses to nursing interventions and prescribed medical treatments; notes all changes in physician order on assigned patients
  • Obtains and monitors physiological data of patients
  • Observes the physiological manifestations of patients and intervenes when necessary
  • Interacts with family and patient regarding care plan while in the hospital and at time of discharge
  • Informs patient and family of hospital procedures
  • Makes referral regarding patient care needs to appropriate personnel

General Responsibilities:

  • Performs other duties as assigned

Minimum Qualifications:

Education: Graduate from an accredited school of nursing required. Bachelor of Science (or higher) in Nursing Board Approved Program preferred. Successful completion of "Vascular Access Device Selection, Insertion and Management" online course offered by Bard Access Systems within six months of hire.

Experience: One (1) year experience with PICC Line placement preferred.

License(s)/Certification(s)/Registration(s) Required: Current RN License issued by the Oklahoma State Board of Nursing, or a current multistate compact RN License (eNLC). Current Basic Life Support issued by the American Heart Association required upon hire.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

Must have current knowledge of nursing role in PICC Line placement. Knowledge of professional nursing theory, practices, techniques and procedures. Ability to organize, plan, coordinate and evaluate nursing services and apply nursing techniques. Ability to maintain good working relationships with other employees. Good verbal and written communication skills. Some computer skills.
