PURPOSE OF THE JOB
The Shingles Sustainability Engineer
The candidate will collaborate across Science & Technology, Operations, Sourcing, Capital Engineering, Intellectual Property, Product Stewardship, and Marketing organizations to deliver impactful cross-functional initiatives.

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES
Demonstrate a Commitment to Safety
- Commit to our safety stand: all accidents are preventable; safety is everyone’s responsibility and working safely is a condition of employment
- Identify and correct safety hazards in the workplace and improve the safety of our processes through Design Hazard Eliminations (DHEs)
- Ensure rigorous compliance to standard safety procedures and OC corporate policies
Development and validation of recycled and/or sustainable materials in asphalt shingle products
- Executes on a portfolio of materials & technology projects to enhance product sustainability attributes
- Incorporates sustainable design principles into learning plans and material selections.
- Use technical and material science fundamentals to drive material/product validation and intellectual property.
- Plans, coordinates and executes rapid lab, plant-trial, and testing plans for robust evaluation.
- Employ statistical methodologies to drive efficient data-based decisions
Partner with cross functional resources and serve as project/technical lead to drive sustainable product innovation.
- Works horizontally with enterprise sustainability, innovation, and functional teams to accelerate results and implementation of solutions.
- Collaborates externally to accelerate technical solutions and material understanding.
- Lead stage-gated development projects from concept to commercialization
- Define, manage, and communicate the scope, timeline, and resources needed
- Engage large cross-functional teams to ensure consistent alignment with the business strategy throughout the project and to ensure delivery of project objectives
- Collaborate and communicate effectively with people at all levels within the organization
JOB REQUIREMENTS
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
- Bachelor’s degree in Chemistry, Materials Science or Engineering related technical field.
- Minimum 3 years’ experience in R&D or industrial setting.
- Demonstrated project management experience in R&D and/or Manufacturing environments.
- Ability to travel 15-30% to manufacturing plants, technology vendors, and raw material suppliers.
PREFERRED EXPERIENCE
- Advanced degree in Chemistry, Materials Science or Engineering related technical field.
- Industry experience with eco-design principles, recycled materials, and product life cycle.
- 5-10 years of product and/or technology development experience in asphalt, roofing, or building & construction materials industry.
- Track record of translating customer and operations insights into valuable product & material solutions.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES
- Fluent in English.
- Proficient in the use of Minitab or similar software for statistical analysis.
- Demonstrated ability to learn across multiple technology domains.
- Critical Thinking: Reduces complex technical problems down to their most simple core, demonstrating objective analysis and evaluation.
- Accountability: Knows what needs to be done and gets it done. Willingly takes responsibility for project outcomes as a whole. Unafraid of owning the results, actions and decisions of self or organization. Committed to follow through to completion.
