Position Summary-Assistant Principal

OWNCS  Middle School, located in Long Island City, Queens, is one of the oldest charter schools in NYS. It has been recognized as an excellent and exemplary middle school. OWNCS Middle School is also the only charter middle school in NYS that is accredited by the International Baccalaureate Organization to operate as an International Baccalaureate World School offering the Middle Years Program (MYP).

OWNCS Middle School is seeking a dynamic Assistant Principal to provide exemplary leadership, work hard to meet the high-accountability demands and close achievement gaps. Our ideal candidate will bring a passion for the mission of OWNCS, an understanding and respect for the culture and dignity of all members of our community, and a desire for working in a school setting that fosters a love for children.

OWNCS Middle School provides students with a first-class learning experience that maximizes their intellectual, social, emotional, and physical development, including the development of their ability to apply their intellect to solving problems and contribute to their communities as enlightened and responsible citizens.

                                                               Experience and Knowledge

  • Be highly qualified in accordance with the No Child Left Behind Act of 2001
  • Master’s degree  from an accredited university or college
  • Minimum of fives years teaching with NYS teaching certification
  • Extensive knowledge of learning theories, current educational trends, program planning, curriculum development, and management of instructional programs
  • Excellent oral/written communication skills and strong interpersonal skills to present information before large and small groups
  • Preferred: NY Certification - School Building Leader

  Duties, Roles, & Responsibilities

  • Coordinates efforts with the building Principal to establish and implement a shared mission and vision for the school that leads to academic and social-emotional growth for all learners.
  • Supports and collaborates with the Principal in developing, implementing, and monitoring the outcomes of the school's improvement plan which measure school-wide academic achievement and school climate indicators.
  • Develops, in collaboration with the Principal and staff, consistent instructional practices which reflect effective teaching and learning that includes a rigorous and relevant standards-based curriculum.
  • Establishes, in collaboration with the building Principal and staff, a continuous improvement cycle that uses multiple forms of data and student work samples to support individual, team, and school-wide improvement goals, identifies and address target areas for improvement, measures outcomes and celebrates successes.
  • In collaboration with the building Principal, evaluates the effectiveness of instruction and of individual teachers by conducting frequent formal and informal observations and provides timely, specific feedback on instruction.
  • In partnership with the building Principal, creates, develops and sustains relationships that result in active student engagement in the learning process.
  • Utilizes meaningful feedback from students, staff, families, and community in the evaluation of instructional programs and school procedures.
  • Proactively engages families and communities in supporting student learning and the school’s shared mission, vision and learning goals.
  • Works closely with the building Principal to manage  student’s behavior and discipline needs including coordination, as necessary, with teachers, Guidance Counselor and Special Education Coordinator.  This includes follow up with families so that there is clear understanding and communication about how the school is handling situations that arise.
  • In partnership with the building Principal and Director of Student Support is responsible for the implementation of Special Education, English as a New Language students, and Academic Intervention Service programs.
  • With the building Principal, creates and supports a climate that values, accepts and understands cultural diversity and multiple perspectives.
  • Works with the building Principal to ensure a culture of high aspirations and academic achievement for every student.
  • Consistently models positive behavior aligned to the school’s vision and mission and builds the capacity of others in the school community.
  • Takes on other duties as assigned with passion and dedication.

Compensation and Benefits Program

Salary Ranges from $100,000 to $150,000 based on experience and certifications
