TITLE: DIRECTOR OF THE LIBRARY

STATUS: Full-Time / Exempt

Summary of Position:

The Director of the Library is responsible for the administration and expansion of the College’s Library and its services to students, faculty, administrators, and staff. The Director of the Library reports to the Dean of Academic Affairs.

Supervisor responsibilities: None

Essential functions include, but are not limited to:

Administrative:

  •  Administer College mission, policies, and procedures as they relate to the Library;
  •  Develop and administer all Library policies and procedures;
  •  Manage the Library budget to maximize student resources;
  •  Provide effective service to faculty, students, and other staff through reference and consultation services, bibliographic instruction and presentations;
  •  Manage and maintain communication within the Library and between the Library and the College’s students, faculty, administration, and staff;
  •  Meet with faculty to develop collaborative participation in Library services and development; especially Information Literacy and collection development;
  •  Develop unique ways to use the physical space of the library;
  •  Identify opportunities to create “relational library spaces” to develop increased usage of the facility;
  •  Supervise work-study students, co-op students, and volunteers;
  •  Successfully provide library orientations;
  •  Perform work related to public services, technical services, systems, and archives;
  •  Organize and produce student and faculty library usage reports;
  •  Update records for the library's collections including enhanced bibliographical descriptions of manuscripts and printed works;
  •  Maintain appropriate statistical records of services and other related information;
  •  Administer the Library’s integrated online automation system including the implementation of subsystems;
  •  Consolidate information about Library operations and services into the appropriate reporting formats as needed and upon request for special projects, such as the Middle States report;
  •  Participate in college events, such as orientations, graduations, open-house tours, etc.
  •  Identify potential grants, write grants, and recommend opportunities for grants;
  •  Serve on Middle States Standards Committee (as assigned by Academic Affairs) as well as other college-wide committees;
  •  Work with faculty to manage honor society activities and inductions;
  •  Other duties as assigned by the College.

Technical Services:

  •  Supervise operations and procedures of the areas of technical services;
  •  Select new resources to meet user needs, based on program developments, usage, budgetary restraints, and other appropriate information;
  •  Identify innovative ways to maximize the usage of the information available through the library’s collection;
  •  Maintain accurate records of the Library’s collections and holdings;
  •  Maintain the bibliographic record of the collection through the use of the Library’s automation system and by cataloging all resources in the Library’s possession;
  •  Develop and maintain an archive of resources related to the history of the College;
  •  Supervise the preparation of all Library resources for use;
  •  Supervise the maintenance of the physical collection, including location and condition; Correct, repair or replace as necessary;
  •  Prepare requests for all new resource orders and for all supplies needed for library operations;
  •  Maintain appropriate records of all purchases.

Public Services:

  •  Supervise the delivery of all public services;
  •  Create learning communities within the physical space of the library;
  •  Provide all levels of reference assistance to students, faculty, administration, and staff; including specialized research requests for administrators, faculty, and staff;
  •  Maintain appropriate records of reference transactions;
  •  Develop policies related to the circulation and use of all Library resources;
  •  Administer all aspects of the circulation and use of Library resources;
  •  Maintain a collection of materials kept as “Reserves” for class use based on the current textbook list and faculty requests;
  •  Administer the Library’s Interlibrary Loan Service and maintain appropriate records as required;
  •  Develop and provide appropriate reports concerning all aspects of Public Services;
  •  Develop and provide appropriate information literacy instruction across the curriculum, making workshops available to any and all classes;
  •  Encourage faculty to include information literacy and library research projects in their classes and to attend workshops with their students;
  •  Develop and provide appropriate information literacy instruction workshops for all faculty and staff;
  •  Develop appropriate print and electronic resource guides to aid library users in their research;
  •  Communicate information about the Library and its services to the P.I.T. community through the use of tools such as the Library newsletter, email and other appropriate forms of communication;
  •  Develop a viable Library website that will provide information about the services and resources of the Library, as well as guide users to other authoritative information.

Required Skills / Abilities:

  • Possess an understanding of the changing role of academic libraries in higher education;
  • Knowledge of current and developing library technology;
  • Ability to create and present innovative multimedia programs to enhance library usage;
  • Ability to develop effective working relationships with academic colleagues;
  • Ability to work well with a diverse community of users;
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.

 Qualifications:

  •  Master’s degree in Library or Information Science from an ALA-accredited program or equivalent.
  •  Minimum of five years progressively responsible library positions; academic library experience strongly preferred.

Physical Requirements:

  •  Prolonged periods sitting at a desk and working on a computer.
  •  Sitting or standing for long periods of time.
  •  Ability to easily navigate several flights of stairs multiple times per day.

The College requires all new employees to have successfully completed background clearances. New employees must complete the background clearances prior to hire and, for those employees having direct contact with minors other than those described above, prior to the time they will begin having direct contact with minors and every 60 months thereafter. The College also reserves the right to require any employee to have a background check in its discretion during employment. Clearances required include a PA Statewide Criminal Record search, PA Child Abuse History, and FBI Criminal History record fingerprint search. A criminal record may be considered justification not to hire or for employment termination, depending upon the circumstances and record.
