Summary: The Safety Lead is responsible for supporting, mentoring, motivating, and fostering a safety-conscious culture in the workplace under limited direction of the Safety Manager to ensure safe production and a healthy, accident-free work environment. This individual will work with the Safety Manager and PAC team members to ensure adherence to company policies and regulatory requirements. The Safety Lead should have experience in understanding best practices, recognizing potential hazards, developing necessary resources and communicating the company’s expectations for mitigating hazards in a professional manner. The Safety Lead should enjoy the challenges of a manufacturing environment and have the patience and mentoring know-how to work “hands on” to help the entire team understand PAC’s commitment to safety, the applicable industrial regulations & codes with the drive to lead the safety programs. This will require spending time in the manufacturing facility daily and may entail weekend or late shift work hours as needed.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Provides backup for Safety Manager.
- Works with other PAC locations in providing a consistent safety methodology and understanding.
- Assists the Safety Manager in regulatory reporting or agency representation as needed.
- Demonstrates competent internal and external communication skills.
- Helps to motivate and foster a safety-conscious culture in the workplace in an effort to reduce incidents and injuries.
- Supervises emergency response and evacuation procedures and corresponding practice drills.
- Reviews and maintains records for accuracy of information and compliance with established procedures.
- Participates effectively in team initiatives, either as a leader or as a supporter.
- Supports or leads the investigation of accidents and injuries.
- Provides innovative safety solutions and ideas.
- Has the patience to work “hands on” to help the entire team understand the company’s commitment to safety.
- Performs Gemba walks & daily inspections to detect existing or potential accident or health hazards, then works with staff to resolve unsafe work conditions.
- Identifies company safety training needs, then develops and implements safety-training programs in line with L&D Department.
- Coordinates objectives with safety procedures in cooperation with other managers to maximize a safe working environment and minimize accidents.
- May be asked to represent the organization in community or industry safety groups and programs.
- Maintain safety files and records.
- Inspects the facility and work environments to detect existing or potential accident or health hazards, then determines corrective or preventative measures.
- Acts as lead sponsor on the PAC Action Council in coordination & implementation of safety improvement processes.
- Assumes subject matter expert role of APM LOTO training and implementation.
- Works with engineering to provide safe machine development.
Additional responsibilities include providing informational support to all members of internal management team under the guidance of the safety manager related to EHS issues and safety support, such as PPE management, first aid management, training of New Hires and Contractors, as needed.
Qualifications:
Education and/or Experience:
- Associates Degree or higher in Science preferred
- 3 years of safety experience in a manufacturing environment
- Understanding of EHS regulatory laws, codes and standards and their application to general industry preferred
- Direct safety experience with a comprehensive knowledge of safety concepts
- Committed to become certified in EHS discipline within 12 months
Language Skills:
- Must have ability to read, write and understand English
- Must be able to understand reports and correspondence
- Must have the ability to speak effectively before groups
- Bi-lingual (English/Spanish) a plus
Mathematical Skills:
- The position must be capable of performing all types of general business-related mathematics.
Reasoning/Demeanor Ability:
- Basic reasoning skills with the ability to deal with problems involving several variables in multiple types of situations with the approach of team building and providing a bridge between differing opinions.
Computer Skills:
- To perform this job successfully, an individual should have a strong working knowledge of Microsoft Office software and be willing to complete additional training.
- Ability to collect, plot, graph, and interpret safety data required.
Certificates, Licenses, Registrations:
- Valid Ohio driver’s license, required
- OSHA 30 Hour Training strongly preferred
- Safety certification preferred or ability to obtain certification within an arranged timeframe.
