The PNNL's Buildings Simulation & Design Group provides energy simulation, tool development, and workflow automation for energy policy impact analyses and integrative building design processes. The Building Simulation & Design Group is looking for senior-level Mechancial Engineer - Building Energy Research (Level 4) with strong building energy modeling skills, deep knowledge of building science and technologies, extensive experience in engineering and research project management, a collaborative approach to problem-solving, a desire to work as part of a collaborative team solving national challenges in buildings research and policy.

Responsibilities

The successful candidate will be accountable to:

  • Project and/or Task Managers for performing assigned roles, following applicable project and field procedures, and performance of assigned tasks on time and within budget.

  • The Buildings Simulation & Design Group Leader and Building Simulation Team Leader, for general staff performance and development, operational discipline (e.g., maintaining training qualifications, procedural compliance, safe operations), and project execution.

This position provides the opportunity to assume a leading role supporting development, adoption, and compliance with residential and non-residential building energy codes, and other research projects towards building energy efficiency and decarbonization. This may include:

  • Use of building simulation tools, including EnergyPlus and OpenStudieo simulation software.

  • Other types of energy data, engineering and economic analysis of high performance buildings.

  • Design and analysis of technology testing and demonstration experiments.

  • Oversight of the development of software and simulation rulesets for rating the energy performance of buildings.

  • Large-scale building energy simulation analysis using data-oriented programming / scripting languages.

  • Develop research proposals and manage research project teams.

  • Oversee research projects conducted by PNNL contractors.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:

  • BS/BA and 7 years of relevant work experience -OR-

  • MS/MA and 5 years of relevant work experience -OR-

  • PhD with 3 year of relevant experience

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree or Ph.D with in Mechanical Engineering, Architectural Engineering, Building Sciences or related field.

  • Advanced skill in building energy and control system simulation with experience using EnergyPlus, DOE2, or similar modeling software.

  • Experience using building simulation and other analytical tools to model innovative technologies and energy efficiency strategies for building HVAC, lighting, and envelope systems in residential and commercial buildings.

  • Experience developing and managing research projects including proposal writing, securing project funding, and leading technical teams.

  • Experience applying engineering economics and cost estimating to demonstrate cost effectiveness of energy efficiency strategies.

  • Experience developing technical requirements for building energy codes or standards and/or using energy simulation for code compliance or beyond code incentive programs such as LEED or utility programs.

  • Experience in the use or development of building performance rating methods such as ASHRAE 90.1 Appendix G Performance Rating Method.

  • Experience delivering presentations and the ability to convey technical information to both technical and nontechnical audiences.

  • Experience applying statistical methods to research results.

  • Building commissioning and energy auditing experience.

  • Experience with data-oriented programming/scripting languages such as Ruby, R, Perl, and Python on Linux-based computer clusters.

  • Experience in software development.

  • Building Energy Modeling Professional Certification.

  • Excellent verbal and written communiation skills in English.

  • A proactive and collaborative approach to problem-solving with the abilty to work well on interdisciplinary teams.

  • A passion for learning and innovation, and a desire to advance the building sciences domain through improvements in energy efficiency.
