140 miles west of Detroit and 50 miles south of Grand Rapids, Kalamazoo is a city in southern Michigan. The Kalamazoo Valley Museum offers science, technology and history exhibits, plus a planetarium. American and European art form the core collection of the Kalamazoo Institute of Arts. The Evergreen Packaging Kalamazoo Carton Converting Facility is located in Kalamazoo, Michigan, with easy access to the beautiful Great Lakes region and the cities of Chicago and Detroit. Opened in 1952 and employing 175 team members, the facility prints and die cuts refrigerated gable top cartons for a variety of national and regional brands, primarily supplying important dairy nutrition to schoolchildren throughout the US.

Responsibilities

Purpose of the Job:Responsible for all carton sealing/finishing processes and leading department’s hourly employees to achieve required goals for safety, environmental compliance, quality, scrap minimization, productivity, and customer delivery dates. Sealing Manager will embody the highest standards of integrity, ethical conduct, leadership empathy, and will ensure all areas of responsibility are fully engaged in lean manufacturing and continuous improvement.

Essential Functions/Responsibilities:1. Sealing: Manage all sealing machines with automatic feeders, skivers, packers, palletizers, and stretch wrappers. Lead and support the supervisors with hiring, training, and developing the employees in sealing quality product in a safe manner. Ensure standards are met or exceeded in waste, safety, quality, and utilization. All crews are required to participate in crew meeting and job task observations.2. Quality: Communicate with Quality Assurance Manager concerning all issues affecting quality (side seams, skiving issues, mixed loads, etc.).3. Maintenance: Work directly with the Maintenance Manager on planning, scheduling and training in support of the maintenance requirements of the equipment. Ensure equipment is inspected and repaired on the necessary service schedule. 4. Production/Converting: Establish working knowledge of production processes, quality control, costs, and other techniques for maximizing the effective manufacture of product that meets all customer requirements.5. Purchasing: Review and approve all purchases for the department.6. Scheduling: Responsible for scheduling equipment to meet customer orders, Preventative Maintenance, equipment rebuilds, and process improvements to ensure machine utilization meets or exceeds budget and customer satisfaction is exceeded. Work with the Production Schedulers, Printing Department, Customer Service, and Maintenance to facilitate all activities to meet budgeted goals.7. Human Resources: Monitor staffing levels and ensure all required teams are hired, trained, and developed to support the manufacturing operation. 8. Ensure administration and adherence to all requirements of SQF Code.9. Ensure adequate resources are available to support the development, implementation, maintenance, and ongoing improvement of the SQF system.10. Ensure the integrity of the SQF System.11. Communicate to relevant personnel all information essential to ensure the effective implementation and maintenance of the SQF system.2. To undertake operational duties as required to meet deadlines and/or cover for staff absence, filling gaps in resources in all area as needed.13. Ensure that the Bargaining Agreement is followed correctly at all times.14. To review and make recommendations to ensure operations run effectively.15. To work closely with HR to produce and review individual/team performance. Providing information and commentary on a regular basis.16. Oversee the evaluation, training, and development of all employees to enhance career goals, retention, succession planning, and performance improvement.17. Ensure effective implementation and on-going compliance with Pactiv-Evergreen Quality Management System.18. Provide products and services that consistently meet the mutually agreed upon specifications of both our internal and external customers.19. Involve team members in continuously improving the quality of our products and services, and the efficiency of operations, and staff activities throughout the business.20. Responsible for providing resources and tools necessary for the development and implementation of quality and food safety systems.21. Provide leadership and direction for achieving quality improvement by interpreting policy, recommending strategies, organizing resources, and assisting leaders in the development and implementation of improvement plans.22. Produce safe, quality products that comply with all applicable federal, state, and international laws, regulations, and guidelines. Compliance will be assured by internal and external third-party audits and product testing.23. Participate in the yearly HAACP review24. Participate in monthly food safety internal audits25. Ensure that all requirements of SQF Code are being administered and adhered to.26. Leading quality improvement activities within their respective organizations. 27. Responsible for compliance with and adherence to all established good manufacturing practices

Qualifications

Qualifications: Education, Skills and/or Experience Required1. Four-year degree required. Technical undergraduate degree/mechanical engineering preferred.2. Experience in flexographic or process printing preferred 3. Experience in Paper Converting Process preferred4. Four or more total years of experience in Leadership roles within a manufacturing environment5. Direct first-line leadership responsibility for hourly teams6. Management of lead managers experience and skills7. Organizational design, LEAN, and Business planning skills8. Effective communication, interpersonal, and problem-solving skills9. Demonstrated proficiency with computer ERP/SAP systems and Office/Excel software10. Ability to motivate, train, and delegate responsibility11. Ability to lead, build consensus, and work within a team environment12. Initiate and manage change

13. Knowledge of food safety requirements14. Ability to interpret and administer the SQF Code15. Competent in product legality, safety, and quality
