JOB DESCRIPTION

POSITION: DIRECTOR OF MAJOR GIFTS

REPORTS TO: VP OF INSTITUTIONAL ADVANCEMENT

The Office of Institutional Advancement is responsible for securing resources for Paine College through soliciting, cultivating, and managing gifts. The Institutional Advancement Office oversees the Annual Fund Campaign, Annual Scholarship Campaign, UNCF Scholarship Campaign, Endowed Fund initiatives, Campus Life Ministry Campaign, Alumni Relations, Communications and Marketing, Gifts Acknowledgement, Prospect Research and Database management of donors, grant development, and stewardship.

RESPONSIBILITIES: Develop a comprehensive and dynamic plan to identify, cultivate, solicit, and steward major gift prospects for Paine College. Implement a donor centered cultivation process, and a value/mission-based appeal according to the “seven steps” of solicitation. The individual will work with a team to develop a systematic approach for security major gifts on an ongoing basis

DUTIES:

Solicit and cultivate gifts at levels of $100,000 and above.

Create and implement a 2-year major giving strategy with current and potential donors using the “seven steps” timeline.

Develop a major donor strategy to enable the institution to have an ongoing flow of contacts and donors.

Develop and implement a solicitation strategy for each assigned major gift prospect, including preparation of written proposal informational materials, endowment agreements, gift illustrations, campaign and other materials needed to secure major gifts.

Maintain excellent major donor relations through personal contacts, phone calls, emails, and hardcopy or electronic letters of correspondence.

Build and manage internal and external networks to assist in identification, cultivation and solicitation of major gift prospects and support.

Provide leadership at an organizational level to train staff and Board members and encourage staff-wide participation in the donor cultivation program.

Convene with the President and Vice President of Institutional Advancement as requested by the President. Include President, Vice President, Provost & VP of Academic Affairs, Chief Fiscal Officer, Faculty, and others in cultivation and closing meetings with donors when appropriate.

When requested by the President, provide updates to the Administrative Council on the progress of cultivation, solicitations, and donations.

Assist with publicity arrangements on important gifts, program accomplishments or events.

Effectively and efficiently utilize the appropriate module in Jenzabar for prospect/donor tracking, managing, and monitoring program success.

Organize cultivation events, meetings and opportunities to raise funds through gifts of cash, securities, personal and real property for the following needs and campaigns: Annual Fund, Capital Improvements, Endowment, Endowed Chairs, Scholarships, Athletics, and special projects.

In conjunction with the Vice President of Institutional Advancement and the President, and the Advancement Staff, establish and meet annual goals for major giving programs.

Other duties as assigned by management.

QUALIFICATIONS:

The selected candidate will have demonstrated accomplishments in Advancement with a proven track record of fundraising success in the execution of major gift solicitations.

- 5 years success operating and managing a major giving strategy and program, with success in making one-to-one asks of donors.

- Demonstrated ability to instruct, motivate and train others, and work effectively with staff, volunteers and general public, including public

speaking experience.

- Excellent oral and written communication, planning, and organizational skills.

- Bachelor’s degree is required in marketing, business, communications or equivalent degree.

- Strategic thinker and planner.

- Must have a strong work ethic.

- Working knowledge of Word, Excel, and database management software.

- Ability to work flexible hours.

MEASURES OF ACCOUNTABILITY:

The primary measures of performance will be the degree of attainment of the

goals and objectives of the Advancement Office vested in this position,

including:

- Major gifts received

- Ability to motivate donors and volunteer leadership

- Effective working relationships with employees, corporations, organizations, faith-based community, and volunteers

- Effective management of time and other organizational resources

- Knowledge of Paine College’s academic programs, policies, mission, vision, and resources as related to this position

- Speak effectively in public forums

- Accomplish goals, using sound judgment and decision-making skills and to creatively problem- solve issues

- Weekly communication with Vice President of Institutional Advancement, President, and Institutional Advancement team about strategies and progress

- Bi-weekly meetings with President about strategies and progress
