Primary Purpose:
Assist in development and implementation of a comprehensive program of health
services for the school; responsible for providing direct health services to students;
promote education and preventive health practices for students; serve as health
advocate for students
Qualifications:
Education/Certification:
- Graduate of an accredited professional nursing education program culminating with a certification as a registered nurse licensed through the Texas State Board of Nurse Examiners
- Licensed Registered Nurse
Special Knowledge/Skills:
- Valid registered nurse license to practice professional nursing in Texas from the State Board of Nurse Examiners
Major Responsibilities and Duties:
- Complies with confidentiality requirements of the Texas Nurse Practice Act
- Practices within the defined limits of the Texas Nurse Practice Act
- Complies with federal, state, and loca laws/regulations governing school health
- Serves as the nurse liaison between administration, nurses, parents, and students
- Assists administration in establishing, evaluating, and directing the program for health services as rendered in the schools; participates in nursing policy formulation and decision making
- Assists staff members in interpreting school health policies regarding immunizations, communicable diseases, medications, infection control, special needs and the emergent care of the ill and injured
- Plans and conducts orientation programs for new nurses, other health service personnel and substitute nurses
- Assists administration in recruiting and interviewing new employees for health services positions and make recommendations to school principals
- Verifies state nursing licensure annually for all nursing staff; verifies other certification needed for the job including vision, hearing, spinal screening and CPR
- Coordinates, compiles and submits all required reports of the school health program to the appropriate agency
- Assists staff members in interpreting health policies regarding immunizations, communicable diseases, medication and emergency care of the ill injured
- Coordinates, compiles and submits all required reports of the school health services for the students within PISD
- Remains current on new medical developments in health-related fields that may enhance the effectiveness of the program
- Plans in-service programs for the nursing staff
- Works closely with Special Programs Administration on the nursing budget
- Acts as a clinical resource for the district
- Participates on district committees, examples include; SHAC, Crisis Management, Nursing Policy and Procedure Committee and other committees as required
- Participates in staff meetings and professional activities; promotes health by conducting health related educational opportunities, examples include: Puberty Talks, Hygiene Talks, BMI, and Wellness classes
- Maintains current communication with nurses and administration
- Completes mandated Continuing Education Units (CEU) to maintain current license
- Maintains current CPR/First Aid certification
- Maintains current vision/hearing and Scoliosis screening certification
- Computer skills for Window, MS Word, First Class email systems and Skyward to complete clinic reports and maintain health records
- Performs additional duties as may be assigned by administration
