The Zoning Intern will assist the Zoning Planners with zoning data collection and analysis, zoning research and answering zoning inquiries.
The Current Planning Division’s Zoning Team is seeking an intern with an interest in zoning and planning. The intern should have strong interpersonal communication skills and want to learn more about zoning data analysis, land use planning, and land development code implementation and enforcement.
- The Zoning Planning Intern will assist with the zoning data collection, production of maps and technical reports, analyzing data and preparing written summaries of analyses and conclusions regarding zoning inquiries, technical and administrative review of the zoning map amendments, and technical review of development projects for consistency with the County’s short and long range plans.
- Ideal candidate will have strong writing skills, the ability to convey complex topics clearly and concisely, good attention to detail, effective communication and ability to multi-task and flexibility to quickly move from one project to another.
- Ability to operate a computer and to use a keyboard to enter data.
- Ability to sit, stoop, squat, walk, and stand frequently.
- Ability to lift 25 pounds.
- Performs other work as necessary.
- An understanding of, and passion/strong interest in zoning and planning concepts, and data collection and analysis.
- Excellent research, strong writing and verbal communications skills on complex topics clearly and concisely with excellent attention to detail.
- Ability to read for comprehension.
- Multi-tasker able to handle requests in a timely manner and flexibility to quickly move from one project to another, with a desire to help others, and able to function as a team member.
- Successful candidates will possess the requisite discipline, organization, and self-motivation to work independently, with minimal supervision.
- Knowledge of zoning planning software such as OpenCounter, Smartsheet/Excel, and Arc GIS is preferred.
- Familiarity with WebEx meetings and/or WebEx Teams, Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Publisher, Outlook), Adobe Pro preferred.
PHYSICAL SKILLS/WORKING CONDITIONS: Ability to communicate effectively using verbal, written and visual communication. Ability to operate a computer and to use a keyboard to enter data. Ability to sit, stoop, squat, walk, and stand frequently. Ability to lift 25 pounds. Ability to work 20 hours per week.
EDUCATION, TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE: Candidate may be enrolled in or graduated from an accredited college or university and be working on a Bachelor's or Master’s Degree in urban planning, civil engineering or a related field.
Students must have at least three (3) years of education completed at an accredited college or university. However, two (2) years' of direct research experience in urban planning may be substituted for one (1) year of education.
LICENSES, CERTIFICATIONS OR REGISTRATIONS: Must possess a valid Florida driver’s license.
