The Division of Translational Medicine and Human Genetics is seeking to hire a genetic counselor for a combination laboratory (50%) and clinical role (50%)

Clinical genetic counseling will be performed within the Division of Translational Medicine and Human Genetics. Our division consists of clinical geneticists, genetic counselors, clinical coordinators and a nurse practitioner who care for patients in a variety of clinics. We specialize in caring for adults with lysosomal storage disorders, neurofibromatosis type 1, general genetic disorders, aortopathies, HHT and rare cancer syndromes. This position is intended specifically to support our hereditary cancer clinics, which see patients for neuroendocrine tumors, renal cancer, melanoma and tumors/cancers of the CNS.

Additionally, this position will provide genetic counseling support to the Genetic Diagnostic Laboratory (GDL) and expected to participate in data review as well as report writing. The Genetic Diagnostic Laboratory was established in 1994 by Dr. Arupa Ganguly. Under Dr. Ganguly’s leadership, the GDL provides specialized genetic testing in a range of clinical areas, including hereditary cancer syndromes, methylation disorders and others. Job Responsibilities:

Clinical:

  • Provide comprehensive genetic counseling to patients regarding etiology, inheritance, risks, available genetic testing and natural history of genetic disorders. Includes the collection and interpretation of individual and family medical and psychosocial histories.
  • Select appropriate testing, coordinate sample collection, track test results, interpret genetic test results
  • Facilitate follow-up to genetic counseling including telephone communication with patients, families and health care providers, coordination of additional studies
  • Develop expertise within a wide variety of clinical indications

Laboratory:

Review genetic testing data and generate laboratory reports for all tests offered in the GDL

  • Respond to testing inquiries, provide ordering clinicians with reports, and answer questions about results
  • Attend weekly meetings with clinical partners

Research:

  • Participate in research activities including subject recruitment, database development, data gathering, survey development, writing consent forms and developing protocols.
  • Participate in writing manuscripts for publication, including conducting literature reviews, writing and editing manuscripts
  • Present research findings at appropriate professional meetings

Education:

  • Engage with the University of Pennsylvania Genetic Counseling Program to train future genetic counselor
  • Supervise genetic counseling student rotations
  • Lecture on genetic counseling and related topics to support groups, students, health care providers and the public, as needed

Requirements:

  • Master’s degree in Genetic Counseling or equivalent from an ACGC-accredited genetic counseling program. Board eligible or board certified by the American Board of Medical Genetics.

  • A candidate completing his or her Master’s degree will be considered with an offer contingent on completion of the program. Pennsylvania genetic counseling license is required to be obtained, as well as the ability to pass child abuse screening.

  • New graduates and more experienced genetic counselors are encouraged to apply!
