Job Posting for Paralegal I/II/III at Pennsylvania Office of Attorney General
The Pennsylvania Office of Consumer Advocate (OCA) seeks two full-time Paralegals. The OCA is the statutory representative of Pennsylvania utility consumers before the Pennsylvania Public Utility Commission (PUC), federal regulatory agencies, and state and federal courts. A Paralegal can expect to perform a variety of legal and related work in assisting attorneys in the practice of utility law and carrying out the responsibilities of the OCA.
The salaries for these positions will generally depend on the qualifications and experience level of the applicant and can fall within the following ranges:
Employees in the higher levels will be expected to perform more complex work assignments with great independence.
Performs research and assists with the drafting of documents for litigation, appellate, hearings, regulatory and legislative matters.
Assists in drafting discovery, motions, briefs, and other legal documents, including comments submitted to administrative agencies.
Assists with response to discovery requests and manages discovery in administrative proceedings.
Responds to basic consumer contacts, including inquiries and complaints, received by the OCA via phone, toll free hotline, mail, or email. Communicates either orally or in writing with consumers, utilities, and other third parties to gather facts; meets with attorney and staff to assist with the resolution of issues or problems; and reviews applicable statutes, regulations, and procedures to assist with consumer contact.
Assists counsel during hearings, mediations, and settlement conference.
Maintains electronic case files and ensures that case is properly organized.
Prepares and submits electronic filings to agencies and courts.
Travels to and attends in-person outreach events to provide members of the public and consumers information about the OCA, receive consumer inquiries, and follow-up with consumers and attorneys regarding such consumer inquiries, consistent with other job responsibilities.
Paralegal I:
Three years of experience as a Legal Assistant 2; or
Two years of experience as a Legal Assistant 3; or
Certification as a Paralegal or Legal Assistant (CP/CLA) by NALA; or
Certification as a Registered Paralegal (RP) by NFPA; or
Advanced Certification for legal professionals (PLS) by NALS; or
Completion of an associate’s degree or post baccalaureate certificate in legal, paralegal, or legal assistant studies or other related field; or
Any equivalent combination of education, experience, and training.
Detail oriented and well organized

Paralegal II:
Four years of experience as a Legal Assistant 2; or
Three years of experience as a Legal Assistant 3; or
Certification as a Paralegal or Legal Assistant (CP/CLA) by NALA and two years performing legal support work; or
Certification as a Registered Paralegal (RP) by NFPA and two years performing legal support work; or
Advanced Certification for legal professionals (PLS) by NALS and two years performing legal support work; or
Completion of an associate’s degree or post baccalaureate certificate in legal, paralegal, or legal assistant studies or other related field and two years performing legal support work; or
Any equivalent combination of education, experience, and training.

Paralegal III:
Five years of experience as a Legal Assistant 2; or
Four years of experience as a Legal Assistant 3; or
Certification as a Paralegal or Legal Assistant (CP/CLA) by NALA and four years performing legal support work; or

Advanced Certification for legal professionals (PLS) by NALS or four years performing legal support work; or
