My client, a non-profit in Alamos, Colorado, focusing on economic and community development programs is hiring a Controller.
Summary:
Maintains departmental fund accounting systems sufficient to meet audit standards of the various programs; prepares timely and accurate financial statements, reports, and budget comparisons; and performs related tasks in addition to standard accounting and bookkeeping. A team effort involving appointing staff with existing assignments and CPA technical advisement will be required, with the Controller position intended to absorb the major share of the financial workload for DRG and its separate entities.
Responsibilities:
- Develop an understanding of existing and desired financial systems for DRG as a whole and the special needs and restrictions of the various programs.
- Prepare financial statements for selected systems and formats sufficient to meet audit, funding source, management, and DRG Executive Board requirements. Timeliness and consistency in the release of this information are important factors.
- Direct and review the accounting functions of the SLVDRG and its component units, including cash management, accounts receivable, cost allocations, journal entries, financial reporting, and accounts payable.
- Maintains internal control procedures and ensures that state and national standard accounting procedures are adhered to.
- Present and discuss financial information at Board meetings and other relevant functions where financials are important in the decision-making process.
- Must have professional computer skills and the ability to apply spreadsheet (intermediate excel) and accounting software (QuickBooks) to the tasks at hand.
- Perform day–to–day bookkeeping and related tasks required to post, file, organize, track, and maintain financial records in a retrievable and secure manner. Portions of these duties may be shared with Account manager as needed.
- Closes books on a monthly basis and provides monthly reporting to the Executive Director and the board including budget to actual analysis and tracking and loan fund availability.
- Evaluate cash sufficiency to meet current or projected operating needs. Monitor cash flow timing for various programs. Advise on the need to prepare funding requests or need to take other supportive action.
- Responsible for overseeing and completing all financial grant reporting and fund reporting requirements and deadlines.
- Prepare or assist in the preparation of budgets, budget comparisons to spending, and budget modifications or revisions.
- Develop an understanding of fiscal compliance issues in the various programs, including matching fund requirements, allowable costs, and other factors.
- Makes necessary year-end adjustments in preparation of the audit and drives the audit process by preparing or copying documents needed, accessing files, and other tasks ensuring audit is completed in a timely manner.
- Perform other accounting and related tasks as assigned.
- Detailed Review of monthly reconciliations such as loan and bank reconciliations with the account manager
- along with any journal entries posted as part of the accounting month end cycle.
- Supervise, train and provide accounting guidance and review work performed by the account manager.
- Serves as fiscal agent for other related entities such as the COG and Gateway.
- Maintains relationship with several government agencies and loan fund agencies to ensure SLVDRG continues in good standing.
- Advises directors on matters related Human Resources management, compliance, payroll, benefits, and policy.
Qualifications
The Controller must be knowledgeable of the following human services, principles, regulations, and
concepts:
- Knowledge and proficiency of governmental budgeting and finance practicum.
- Knowledge of contract and grant processes and administration.
- Knowledge of GAAP accounting, GASB and FASB standards, single audit compliance requirements (0MB "Super Circular").
- Knowledge of all laws governing public sector budgeting and financial reporting.
- Knowledge of Government Standards Board Regulations pertaining to budget and finance.
- Knowledge of HR related laws affecting employee administration.
