Reports to: Chief Librarian

Status: Full-time; exempt, salaried, 30 hours per week, with occasional evenings and weekends. Schedule varies depending on season and program schedule.

Salary/compensation: The starting pay rate for this role is $25 per hour. Pequot Library Association (Pequot Library) provides a competitive benefits package including health, dental, and vision insurance as well as employer-contributed pension plans and generous paid time off.

Overview: The Youth & Teen Library Services Manager creates and implements Library programs for children ages 5-12, school-aged children, and child-related programs for parents and caregivers in an effort to create lifelong readers and learners. This position also develops and maintains a circulating collection for children and young adults while offering encouraging readers advisory.

General Responsibilities

  • Perform reference and reader’s advisory services in person, by telephone and by e-mail, using materials in a variety of formats.
  • Develop and implements programming for youth and teen activities within the Library
  • Assists with traditional programs such as the large family events Candy Making Workshop, Easter Egg Roll, Miss Susan’s Summer Potluck and Campout, 4th of July Bike Parade, Autumn Festival, and the Holiday Caroling Party.
  • Develop and manages all Library teen programming.
  • Plan all Meet the Author, Jr. and Meet the Illustrator youth and teen programs.
  • Work with Secret Service, group of youth and teen volunteers, to staff events
  • Provides service to the community and schools through programming and other Library services.
  • Work together with Fairfield Main Library on the Summer Reading Challenge
  • Work closely with the Children’s Librarian to create a well-rounded roster of family and youth services programming.
  • Evaluate and select materials of interest to children and young adults and maintains the collection through policy-approved weeding of material.
  • Maintain a knowledge of the circulation system to assist at circulation desk.
  • Maintain a knowledge of cataloging system to assist as needed.
  • Assist patrons in use of online catalog and other reference tools and databases.
  • Create displays to enhance the Library collection and to promote lifelong reading.
  • Oversee the well-being of current reading ambassador rabbit, recruiting volunteers to help in the rabbit’s care and to follow-up with vet as needed.
  • Develops and implement a schedule of preK-12 school and after-school, summer, and break programs throughout the year, including the Books for Teachers program.
  • Manage the Library’s community outreach with school administrators, educators, and peer organizations throughout the area, including developing educator workshops and trainings, serving as an advocate for the Library’s field trip learning experiences using the Library’s collections of primary sources.
  • Working closely with Special Collections Librarian, train, mentor, and evaluate volunteer tour guides and contracted educators.
  • Develops a strategic school programs plan that seeks to expand preK-12 and with the goal of making the Special Collections more accessible to school-aged students and researchers.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in the humanities.
  • Proven track record of developing creative and educational public programs for young readers in a public library or nonprofit arts and culture setting.
  • Knowledge and familiarity with children’s literature and reference sources.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills for a variety of audiences and ages, including the ability to deliver engaging public presentations in person and virtually.
  • Able to thrive in a fast-paced environment that supports teamwork and collaboration among library staff, volunteers, and high school/college interns.
  • A spirit of teamwork and collaboration with a mindset that is rooted in flexibility.
  • Ability to work occasional evenings, weekends, and some holidays as needed.
  • Self-motivated with ability to handle variety of duties and deadlines.
  • Able to set priorities and works independently.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Advanced degree in library science, education, the humanities, or a related degree with at least three years of professional experience leading educational programs for children and teens in a library setting.
  • Actively involved with peers working in youth services.
  • Experience managing grant-funded projects and budgeting process.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills with a proven record of working well with colleagues, nonprofit supporters, and other key stakeholders.
  • Wide knowledge of current trends in youth library services
  • High standard of public service, dealing courteously with adults and children.
  • Enthusiasm for working with library patrons of all ages.
