The Digital Command Operations (DCO) team delivers excellence in the pursuit of those breakthroughs through industry-leading infrastructure operations reliability. This is achieved through transparency in business and service health, predictive detection of service interruptions, and improved diagnostics to drive better decisions and interventions.

As Director, Network Operations you will play a crucial role in delivering that excellence. You will be accountable for the operational oversight for Pfizer's global network (e.g., wide area network, local area network, unified communications, perimeter security, and associated infrastructure services such as DNS). You will take an analytical approach to ensuring services are running smoothly: identifying and regularly reviewing operational health indicators and taking action to ensure services are delivered to defined service levels. Following a Site Reliability Engineering (SRE) approach, you will continuously analyze service data to identify and execute upon service improvement opportunities. This will include partnering with development teams to build automations that will remove toil from the environment, and deliver a more reliable, cost-effective service.

Role Responsibilities
  • Ensure network services are meeting the quality and reliability outcomes expected by customers: identify and proactively review health indicators, taking actions as required.
  • Manage a team of Pfizer employees and vendor personnel delivering day-to-day operational support for network services, embedding the core principles and practices of Site Reliability Engineering in the delivery of those services.
  • Build a positive and inclusive team atmosphere, coaching and mentoring team members to enhance their skills and achieve their growth aspirations.
  • Manage a budget for service operations, including service provider and hardware/software maintenance costs.
  • Continuously analyze service data to identify improvement opportunities. Opportunities will be assessed on their potential to remove manual effort ('toil'), improve reliability, and enhance customer experience. Maintain a backlog of prioritized opportunities.
  • As it will be a key mechanism for removing toil, the Director, Network Operations will drive automation efforts for the services in question, partnering with development teams to develop automation code to agreed standards.
  • Demonstrate experience in an agile work environment possessing qualities such as a collaborative mindset, such as a collaborative mindset, adaptability to change, and a proactive problem-solving approach.
  • Assume a leadership role on major outages or planned events that impact the services in question. Collaborate with the Command Center to ensure processes are optimized for management of critical incidents including escalation matrices, troubleshooting plans and impact statements.
  • Proactively identify and address performance and capacity risks in the supported environment.
  • Collaborate closely with Product Owners for Network products. This will include understanding roadmaps, evaluating automation and improvement opportunities, and collaborating to ensure robust practices for turnover to operations.
  • Participate in applicable inspections or audits and execute remediation plans for any identified deficiencies.
  • Lead post-mortems for major events pertaining to the service. Ensure that learnings from service failures are identified and that action plans are develop and executed upon.
Basic Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in computer science or related technical field, or equivalent practical experience.
  • 10 years of relevant experience in enterprise infrastructure settings.
  • Strong technical aptitudes, with demonstrated experience in some or all the network technologies outlined above. Exposure to Site Reliability Engineering principles and practices.
  • Keen business acumen, with a deep understanding for how the services delivered enable Pfizer's critical business processes and the pursuit of breakthroughs; and the cost of delivering those services.
  • Experience of managing a multi-million dollar budget for service delivery.
  • Proven ability to build and lead high-performing teams.
  • Embraces accountability and exhibits an ownership demeanor, be it in leading the response to a major incident or facilitating service improvement. Includes effectively leading others in cross-functional efforts.
  • Keen data literacy and analytical ability. Must be able to aggregate data from different sources, derive insights and formulate actions accordingly.
  • Proven ability to improve processes and workflows, with relentless focus on removing toil (manual effort) through process re-design and automation.
  • Exposure to agile ways of working and aptitudes to be effective in such a paradigm. These include a bias toward action and the discipline to do the day-to-day with excellence (examples: facilitate stand-ups, review health indicators, groom backlog).
  • Communicates in a succinct, accurate and timely fashion. Ability to effectively communicate technical issues/challenges to business recipients.
Preferred Qualifications
  • As driving automation efforts is a core responsibility for this role, an understanding of software development concepts and coding concepts (python, Java) is preferred.
  • Network vendor certifications (e.g., Cisco, Palo Alto, Arista, Riverbed).
  • Understanding of and experience in network monitoring tools.

Digital Command Operations is a 24x7 operations team, with team members spread across multiple geographies. Some flexibility in work hours to connect with these colleagues or manage major outages may be required.

The annual base salary for this position ranges from $161,600.00 to $269,400.00.* In addition, this position is eligible for participation in Pfizer's Global Performance Plan with a bonus target of 20.0% of the base salary and eligibility to participate in our share based long term incentive program. * The annual base salary for this position in Tampa, FL ranges from $145,400.00 to $242,400.00.
