Department Overview
PG&E Applied Technology Services (ATS) is a multidisciplinary team of 129 engineers, scientists, and technicians. ATS has been providing technology-based innovative, high-value services to PG&E for over 40 years. The Electrical Testing and Project Support Unit offers a range of electrical testing and analysis services in support of Power Generation (Hydro, Fossil, and Nuclear), Electrical Transmission and Distribution, and Gas Transmission and Distribution activities.
The ATS Metrology Engineering and the Instrument Calibration and Repair (IC&R) lab, located in San Ramon, provides quality calibration and repair services for a wide variety of equipment in use throughout PG&E. Our services include M&TE (Measurement and Test Equipment) testing, calibration, and repairs. The unit has 'Primary and Secondary Standards' capabilities in several areas including AC and DC voltage, current, resistance, temperature, pressure, airflow, dimensional, time, and frequency. Calibrations performed for nuclear power plants are performed in accordance with federally mandated nuclear and internal Quality Assurance program requirements.
Position Summary
This position is represented by Engineers & Scientists of California (ESC) subject to collective bargaining.
The successful candidate in this entry-level position will perform lab and field assignments, interact with ATS warehouse, vendors, suppliers, and customers. This individual will receive, prepare, and process M&TE for calibration, update asset information in the asset database, and package M&TE for customers. This individual will assist in M&TE asset management including report creation, generation, and maintaining. This individual will perform physical work equivalent to moving, lifting, and loading up to 60 pounds of equipment approximately 15-20 times a day. This position also requires some fieldwork and up to 10% of travel throughout the PG&E system, therefore, may require a valid driver's license.
PG&E is providing the hourly rate range that the company in good faith believes it might pay for this position at the time of the job posting. This compensation range is specific to the locality of the job. The actual hourly rate paid to an individual will be based on multiple factors, including, but not limited to, specific skills, education, licenses or certifications, experience, market value, geographic location, collective bargaining agreement, and internal equity. Under the terms of the collective bargaining agreement, the hourly rate range for this position is $38.19 to $54.73, subject to collectively bargained wage increases.
Job Responsibilities
This entry-level role works under supervision or direction of an employee of a higher classification, performs technical, logistical, and administrative work in the field of instrument calibration and repair. This individual works directly with the calibration lab engineering technicians and other senior members of the team. Work performed at this level will be assigned, as required, to prepare the employee for advancement to Technical Specialist II.
- Work in IC&R shipping & receiving group on M&TE receiving, processing, and shipping.
- Process and onboard new, regular, and capital equipment.
- Work as liaison between ATS calibration lab and ATS warehouse.
- Assist in maintaining the enterprise system to manage over 50,000 M&TE across PG&E territory.
- Contract work and liaison with suppliers.
- Assist in administrative work associated with the IC&R and Metrology activities.
- Assist in coordinating and performing audits and writing post-audit reports; writing, reviewing, and modifying procedures.
- Assist in coordinating vendor services, communicate with vendors and customers, obtain and analyze data, process and reconcile purchase orders with calibration vendors, and assist in work associated with the Calibration Lab activities.
- As the need arises, will be expected to assist with other projects which may involve laboratory and/or field testing for various groups at PG&E's Applied Technology Services Department in San Ramon.
Qualifications
Minimum:
- An AA degree related to STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) or its equivalent in education and experience
Desired:
- 1-2 years of experience working in a Calibration Lab, Production line or equivalent fast-paced work environment
- Experience in areas related to Metrology (the science of measurements)
- Experience in utility (Gas or Electric) Operation, Maintenance, construction
- Knowledge of MudCats/MetBench Metrology Suite, or equivalent calibration software
- Strong communication, customer service, time management and prioritization skills
- Ability to read and interpret M&TE specification and perform simple uncertainty analysis and impact evaluation
- Mechanical skills to construct and repair test equipment
- Ability to work independently in the lab, field, or at PG&E or customer facilities
- Prior experience in lab/office management and administrative practices
- Proven ability to work safely within industrial environments
- Computer proficiency with emphasis on Word, Excel, and Visual Basic or similar
- Strong focus on details and ability to follow written procedures closely
- Ability to perform multiple tasks without supervision
