DESCRIPTION

Phillips 66 is seeking a Director of Sustainability Technology in the Innovation & Research team, a part of the Energy Research and Innovation (ERI) organization in Bartlesville, OK. The Director of Sustainability Technology will lead teams focused on research, business unit support and corporate function support in the areas of air, carbon mitigation, water and remediation science. This position plays a key role in enabling the sustainability of Phillips 66’ existing operations and support of company’s efforts associated with emerging energy technologies. The preferred candidate will be a strong leader, experience managing projects in a portfolio, and technical breadth in the areas of atmospheric chemistry, carbon capture utilization and storage, and water technologies. The preferred candidate will also possess strong communication skills for engaging internal and external stakeholders.

Responsibilities May Include

  • Leading teams comprising of scientists, engineers, and technicians who are focused on safely advancing research programs.

  • Supports a culture that values the importance of inclusion and diversity.

  • Consistently aligning research portfolio with ERI strategy and overseeing advancement of projects through portfolio management tools with the goal of commercializing technologies.

  • Developing talent within the organization through continuous coaching, identification of growth and developmental opportunities for team members, and by being a champion for the team in the performance management process.

  • Building long term strategy for research programs in the areas of air, carbon mitigation, water and remediation science.

  • Influencing and managing relationships with stakeholders from groups across the company including but not limited to Emerging Energy, Corporate HSE, ESG, Refining, Legal, Government Affairs, Corporate Strategy, Corporate Business Development, and individual operating plants.

  • Driving timely and transparent communication with the team and key stakeholders.

  • Leading cross-functional efforts focused on advancing strategic corporate initiatives such as carbon capture and storage, environmental issues management, and climate advocacy.

  • Managing capital and expense budget for the team and making sound decisions to address tactical topics.

  • Representing Phillips 66 on trade associations such as API and research consortia such as Petroleum Environment Research Forum (PERF) and managing ongoing and new research relationships with academic institutions.

POSITION REQUIREMENTS

Basic/Required:

  • Master’s degree in Engineering, Chemistry, Materials Science, or science related field

  • 5 or more years of industrial experience

  • 3 or more years of supervisory experience focused on managing teams of research programs/portfolio

Preferred:

  • PhD in Engineering, Chemistry, Materials Science, or science related field

  • 7 or more years of industrial experience

  • 5 or more years of experience as a leader managing teams and research programs/portfolio

  • Knowledge in the areas of air, carbon mitigation, and water and remediation science

  • Track record of strategic thinking, stakeholder engagement and management, ability to solve undefined problems, and sound decision making

  • Strong safety leadership and communication skills

  • Ability to work collaboratively with diverse internal and external stakeholders

  • Open to evolving job responsibilities based on organizational priorities

It’s only 18 miles to the Kansas border with Wichita and Kansas City well within driving distance.
