Guide & Deckhand Job Description

The guide is responsible for the overall customer experience while keeping safety as a number one priority. There will be equipment setup in the AM and equipment storage in the PM. You will be responsible for maintaining communication with your customers and the captain. We are a team environment that strives on working together.

REQUIREMENTS

    *Pass Pre-employment drug test and random test thru the season *First Aid CPR Certification - we will train/pay on our scheduled date if not certified *Must be willing to work long days *Must have positive attitude and strong work ethic *Must be able to swim and carry 50 lbs *Must have patience and humor and the ability to be social with guests *Must be able to work in a team environment


TASKS

    *Setup for daily tour operations: Gear prep and coordination with team *Greet guests with introduction and hand out gear *Provide Safety demonstration which include proper gear fitting and adjustment of equipment *Loading and unloading of customers in and out of their kayaks *Provide detailed narration along the guided tour. This information will be provided to you to study and we will take several mock/training trips *Guide a group of 6 kayaks (12 people) along the Pictured Rocks Shoreline *Recognize the rocks and formations *Know facts about Grand Island *Know facts about Lake Superior, history of area, rock formations *Maintain safety and leadership as #1 priority *Deckhand will stay on boat with Captain and is responsible for basic boat cleaning and maintenance before and after tour *Sweep and mop floors, taking out garbage *Cleaning and stocking bathrooms *Cleaning equipment, assist others *You will be trained in safety with USCG standards *Water safety, fire drills, man overboard and abandoned ship


HOUSING AND TRANSPORTATION

    *We do not provide housing *We do provide Transportation via Van from Harvey to Munising Daily. Meet up point is Lofaro’s Fresh Market Park and Ride


UNIFORMS

    *You will be provided 2 PRK shirts of choice. You may wear shorts/pants that are not cut up, stained or revealing. Please remember we are a professional company and dress with PRK gear. Additional clothing can be purchased in the gift shop for our wholesale cost. Average price is $10 - $25 Talk to Abby about costs * Shoes - Water sandals or strap sandals for work on the boat. This is for safety. Your feet will get wet. No flip flops! *Lunch *Bring lunch - due to turn around time you may not have time to run to town.

TRAINING

    *Training will be provided with kayaking, deckhand, man overboard and boat safety starting in early June and is mandatory *CPR/First Aid Training will be paid for if you do not have this certification. If you cannot make the designated date you will have to fulfill this obligation on your own. We try to schedule during your training but may offer more than one date.


PAY SCALE

Starting $13 per hour

    *Returning Guides receive $1 raise each season max at 4 years or $17 dollars, whichever comes first. *Returning guides must work the full season in order to receive a full $1 raise each year. Full season is considered from Memorial day thru Labor Day *Pre-Season Maintenance and Cleaning pay $12 per hour *September bonus - This is for the month of September only. If you work through the end of the season (end of September) we will adjust your last paycheck with a $1 raise for all hours worked for the month of September. *Example - George works through the full season and has a total of 125 hours for September. We owe George $1 for each hour for September. *Bonus = $125 added to last paycheck *Tips - Announcement will be made at end of tour from Captain on how we do tips *If handed a tip, it is yours to keep. This applies to Captains/guides/deckhands *There is a “crew” bucket for tipping in the office for a crew to share at the end of day. Captains do not share the “crew bucket” tips *We highly recommend you giving the deckhand a percentage of your tips *Overtime after 40 hours *If you are committing to 5 days, one day may be a deckhand or a shorter trip day


RULES ABOUT CANCELED TOURS ( BLOW DAYS)

    *Blow day = a canceled tour or day. We want to be FAIR in this process. Keep in mind, if we can, we offer a reduced kayak tour along Grand Island which might be a shorter day but you will still get tours and tips. *If we cancel the day before you are scheduled to work. 2 OPTIONS: You will have the option to come into work for 4 hours and do side work and receive a full day pay or not come in for no pay. *George is informed we are canceling the tours for the next day. George wants hours so he comes to work as scheduled for 8am and works until 12pm and gets paid for his scheduled shift for the day *George is informed we are canceling the tours for the next day. George takes the day off and receives no pay. *We head out on the boat and realize we cannot run that day. 2 OPTIONS *George stays for a total of 4 hours doing side work and receives full day pay *George goes home and gets paid for the time he was clocked in


SCHEDULING WITH HOMEBASE

Homebase is an app we use for scheduling, hours and managing time off. You are able to download the app for your phone and use it as clock in/clock out, trading shifts, and requesting time off. If you leave work for any reason, especially to grab lunch, you must clock out and clock back in when returning. Please do not take advantage because we are always watching. If you choose to take a break in between tours, please clock out. This will all be covered in training.

    *Schedule will be posted a minimum 2 weeks in advance *You are responsible for submitting your requested days off within the app *If you are scheduled to work and not available it is your responsibility to find coverage *No time off will be granted the first 2 weeks of August. This is traditionally the busiest time in Munising.


Kayak training is in early June and mandatory before you can guide. The water is cold and we hope for the best for good weather. We have wet suits and dry jackets to put on. You WILL get wet. Wool clothing, socks are recommended under your wetsuits.


Recommended to have for early kayak training and through the season are neoprene gloves. We hope to have some for sale in the office. Let us know if you have any questions on this.


Available shifts and compensation: We have available shifts all days of the week. Compensation is $13.00 - $17.00/hour.
