Job Description
Tidewater Community College has served South Hampton Roads both students and employers for 50 years. It has grown from 1 campus into a regional educational and economic force.
TCC is the largest provider of higher education and workforce services in Hampton Roads, enrolling nearly 28,000 students in 2019-20.
Founded in 1968 as a part of the Virginia Community College System, Tidewater Community College (TCC) services South Hampton Roads with 4 campuses in Chesapeake, Norfolk, Portsmouth, and Virginia Beach, 7 regional centers and 2 important cultural institutions.
The college had 3,203 graduates in 2019-2020, 40 percent of whom pursued degrees that would let them transfer to 4-year institutions.
Of South Hampton Roads residents enrolled in higher education 36% enrolled at TCC. TCC’s institutional accreditation is affirmed through 2027 by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges.
Tutors provide academic support to increase student academic achievement by meeting with students to clarify learning objectives and outcomes and work on study skills.
Tutors serve as a supplement to classroom or online teaching. Tutors assist faculty, deans, and the Learning Assistance Supervisor in supporting the student success initiatives of Tidewater Community College.
This English Tutor Recruitment is to fill 3 positions; 2 Virginia Beach Campus & 1 Portsmouth Campus.
Functional Responsibilities :
- Meet with students in a one-to-one, small-group, drop-in, or online tutoring format(s) to provide learning assistance in English and other writing assignments.
- Tutor students in basic computer literacy to include accessing student email, creating and saving documents and other file types, and navigating Canvas.
- Help with developing study strategies (textbooks, handbooks, online resources, etc.) for students requesting tutoring services.
- Participate in team meetings, tutor-training sessions, and professional development training.
- Partner with instructors to offer outreach-learning opportunities in the classroom and team up to offer course-relevant workshops.
- Maintain familiarity with campus resources available to students.
- Maintain a resourceful supply of course-relevant handouts in learning assistance centers.
- Assist with additional duties as assigned. Special Assignments
May be required to perform other duties as assigned. May be required to assist the agency or state government generally in the event of an emergency declaration by the Governor.
KSA's / Required Qualifications Significant knowledge of the concepts taught in College Composition I and II including grammar, mechanics, the essay structure, argumentation, citation styles, and research.
Must have obtained an A or B grade in the course(s) for which tutoring will be performed. Effective oral, written, and technical communication skills.
Ability to contextualize transferable academic study techniques and learning strategies into collaborative learning sessions.
Ability to maintain confidentiality and comply with FERPA.
Ability to work independently and as a team member.
Experience providing excellent customer service to people from varying educational, cultural, and social backgrounds. Demonstrated experience with responsibility, reliability, and punctuality.
