In this position as the Assistant to the Auditor, you will manage a broad range of executive-level support to the Pierce County Auditor. You will be responsible for executive administration, legislative research and analysis, communications, and public records. You’ll serve as a member of the department’s Executive Team and will be involved in every aspect of the organization’s work. This position serves at the pleasure of the Auditor. Work is performed with considerable latitude for ingenuity, creativity, and independent judgment in accomplishing the Auditor’s objectives.

We conduct secure and trustworthy elections, we maintain the integrity and accessibility of public recordings, and we provide reliable licensing and passport services.­­­ We also provide administrative direction and support for the Pierce County Opioid Abatement Council.   • Elections. Pierce County is one of the top vote-by-mail counties in the United States. The Elections Division manages more than half a million registered voters, and we conduct up to four federal, state, and local elections each year serving 114 jurisdictions and more than 500 elected offices. We are busy year-round managing a central ballot processing facility and vote center in Tacoma as well as 51 (and counting!) secure ballot drop boxes throughout the County. Our customer service team updates voter registration rolls daily.
  • Recording. The Recording Division receives, indexes, and records public documents such as deeds, maps, mortgage materials, easements, powers of attorney, liens and military discharge papers. We process anywhere from 100,000 to 200,000 public documents each year depending on market conditions. We collect excise tax payments on the sale of real property.
  • Licensing. The Licensing Division provides auto and boat title services such as tab renewals, trip permits, license plate replacement and more. Want to get a license to get married in Pierce County? That’s us. Need a pet license in unincorporated part of the County? That’s us, too. We manage licensing for certain types of businesses in unincorporated parts of the County, and we staff a full-time, full-service passport office.

Core Daily Responsibilities:
  • Provide support to the Auditor, Deputy Auditor, and management team as assigned.
  • Schedule and maintain the Auditor’s calendar; coordinate and set appointments, using independent judgment to assess priority and attendees.
  • Upon request, conduct research, analyses, and special studies for departmental or public dissemination.
  • Promote and publicize programs and activities through web page development, e-newsletters, blog entries, news events, public outreach, exhibits, publications, etc.
  • Plan and prepare various presentations and speeches, upon request.
  • Identify policy issues and emerging trends; in response, provide strategic communication objectives, techniques, and plans.
  • Respond to requests for information and/or citizen complaints; independently assess appropriate response or required action; directly respond to resolve issues, consult with division management, or assign to appropriate division staff.
  • Provide staff support and logistics for citizen advisory panels, boards, etc.
  • Serve as the Public Records Officer for the Auditor’s Office and support records management in the office.

  • A resume and cover letter are required for this position.
  • Five years progressively responsible clerical and administrative support work is required.
  • Other education or experience that clearly indicates the ability to perform the essential functions of the position may substitute for the recruiting requirements.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Experience working for an elected official, department director, or a government agency.
  • Experience with legislative assistant work such as research, analysis, bill tracking, preparing testimony, and gathering background for fiscal notes.
  • Familiarity with local and state government structure, particularly Pierce County.
  • Excellent communication skills using a variety of methods such as correspondence, reports, websites, social media, presentation software and more.
  • Knowledge of the public records process and/or WAPRO certified.
  • Valid Washington State Driver's License.
