What are the responsibilities and job description for the Veterinary Assistant position at PIPESTONE?
Objective: To serve as a Veterinary Assistant at Family Animal Care. This position will provide record keeping, clerical, scheduling, cash processing, and miscellaneous support roles to the clinic and health care team. This position may also need to assist in veterinary procedures or animal handling.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
- Provide quality client care to the patients and clients of Family Animal Care. Ability to work with clients and patients in a friendly and professional manner.
- Ability to courteously and professionally answer incoming telephone calls utilizing proper telephone etiquette and place outgoing calls responding to client's needs.
- Schedule appointments; collect all necessary information concerning the patient and client. Prepare necessary paperwork in advance.
- Prepare for appointments by having record ready, forms prepared in advance of appointment when possible. Ensure all required forms are filled out and obtain necessary information.
- Client Check In - Greet clients in a professional manner, get client and / or patient to appropriate location in a timely manner.
- Discharge Patients - Ensure billings are complete, records updated, recheck appointments made, payment posted, and present clients with medications.
- Financial - collect payments at time of service, perform end of day responsibilities
- Client communications- follow up with clients after office visits, thank you's, reminder cards, sympathy cards, and social media communications.
- Clerical duties - perform various typical office clerical duties as requested by staff.
- Regular attendance and timeliness are an essential function in order to fulfill the requirements of this position.
- Frequent bending, standing for long periods, lifting inventory and transporting patients weighing up to 50 lbs.
MARGINAL FUNCTIONS
- Other clinic responsibilities - fill veterinary prescriptions, collect and set up various lab tests, unload supply deliveries, assist staff in handling patients, assist in cleaning rooms between appointments, and general cleaning as needed.
- Communicate & educate clients on hospital's preventative medicine protocols, make recommendations based on patient's best interest, and effectively communicate messages from the veterinarian to the client.
- Prepare and administer medications, vaccines, serums, and treatments, as prescribed by the veterinarian.
- Care for and monitor the condition of animals recovering from surgery or hospitalized patients.
POSITION SPECIFICATIONS
Education:
- A minimum of a High School Diploma
- A college degree in Veterinary Assisting, Animal Science, or related field desired.
Experience:
- Prior experience in the Veterinary field required.
- Understanding of the operation of a multi-doctor veterinary clinic is desirable.
- Other related experience will be considered.
Skills:
- Exceptional customer service skills and ability to multitask in a fast-paced environment are a must.
- Strong interpersonal communication skills are important to be able to assess and relay the concerns and urgency of our clients' pets needs to the other healthcare team members.
- Must work well with all team members and ensure that your actions support the hospital, the doctors, and Family Animal Care core values.
