PitchBook seeks a talented financial journalist for the venture capital beat in San Francisco. In this high-profile assignment, you’ll be PitchBook’s lead reporter covering the dealmakers that run Silicon Valley. You’ll keep abreast of the top firms’ investment strategies, performance, and fundraising efforts, providing breaking news and analysis on deals and other notable events in this asset class.

 

Primary Job Responsibilities:

  • Write several articles a week as needed, comprising short-form and in-depth features, about the dealmaking landscape in venture capital 
  • Develop and cultivate a network of trusted industry sources 
  • Produce insightful, informative analysis and trend pieces, leveraging PitchBook’s proprietary data along with traditional newsgathering methods 
  • Report on breaking news as warranted about portfolio companies, venture capital firms, and major developments across the industry 
  • Typical articles will be analytical and forward-looking, combining traditional reporting with quantitative analysis and a heavy dose of data visualization to bolster the storytelling 
  • Write as needed occasional news briefs, commentaries, and other content for PitchBook’s newsletters 

 

Skills and Qualifications:

  • At least 3 years of experience in financial journalism, ideally covering private markets, tech, or startups 
  • Demonstrated news judgment and an ability to cover the beat at a high caliber 
  • Excellent writing, including an ability to establish a narrative based on conceptual and data-focused themes 
  • Write clearly and concisely, with minimal rewriting by editors 
  • Must be a team player who collaborates across the news team and other departments 
  • Translating complex financial and tech topics with an engaging and authoritative voice 
  • Ability to interview a wide variety of industry professionals, regulators, analysts, and others 
  • Able to work with complex data sets to provide quantitative analysis 
  • Skill in using tools for data-driven storytelling 
  • Initiative and ability to pitch and develop your own story topics independently 
  • Work well under deadline pressure, sometimes turning out news stories on short notice 
  • Ability to travel to industry events and meet in person with professional sources 
  • Proficiency with the Microsoft Office suite including in-depth knowledge of Outlook, Word, and Excel with the ability to pick up new systems and software easily

Compensation

  • Annual base salary: $67,025-$105,000
  • Target annual bonus percentage: 5%

 

*Starting pay will be based on several factors and commensurate with qualifications & experience. We also have a location-based compensation structure; there may be different ranges for candidates by location. 

 

Working Conditions:

The job conditions for this position are in a standard office setting. Employees in this position use PC and phone on an on-going basis throughout the day. Limited corporate travel may be required to remote offices or other business meetings and events.
