Position Summary:
The Plant Manager has overall responsibility for the performance of the plant, including, but not limited to maintenance, processing, packaging, sanitation and shipping, receiving and warehouse. This position will direct and coordinate all aspects of production from the processing of raw materials to the shipment of the finished product. The Plant Manager motivates supervisors to provide guidance and programs to enhance the skill levels of their team, and is also responsible for making continuous improvements in an effort to exceed safety, quality and production standards.
Responsibilities:
- Plans, schedules and coordinates the production of safe, high quality, and cost-effective dairy products.
- Reviews processing schedule and production orders to make decisions concerning inventory and staffing requirements, work procedures or duty assignments, while considering budgetary limitations and time constraints.
- Oversees production planning to ensure accurate and efficient scheduling of all production.
- Determines and monitors product standards, examines samples of raw products, and directs testing during processing to ensure finished products are of high quality.
- Examines documents, materials, or products and monitors work processes to assess completeness, accuracy, and conformance to standards and specifications.
- Communicates internally, with vendors and customers to coordinate production or shipping activities and to resolve complaints or eliminate delays.
- Performs capacity studies for long-term demand vs plant capability.
- Analyzes inventory and coordinates inventory and cost control programs with Shipping/Receiving/Warehouse Supervisor.
- Provides leadership to create an environment committed to food safety, employee safety, quality and positive employee relations.
- Monitors operations to evaluate production efficiency, labor utilization, product quality and milk receiving and pooling.
- Oversees corrective actions to ensure continuous improvement of processes and procedures.

- Develops and reviews overall equipment effectiveness (OEE) standards and other metrics in an effort to continuously improve efficiencies in plant processes
- Performs periodic audits to ensure production areas meet SQF guidelines and documentation is accurate and complete, including but not limited to review of charts, make sheets and sanitation logs.
- Develops and implements methods of achieving plant goals within established parameters.
- Ensures preventative maintenance program, installation, repair and cleaning of equipment and facilities is scheduled and completed timely.
- Ensures production and labor costs comply with approved budgets. Provides feedback in development of current and long-term goals and strategies and provides input for plant budget.
- Promotes a safe work place, ensures compliance with safety policies and addresses hazards.
- Ensures monthly production meetings are scheduled and completed while establishing a positive attitude and knowledge toward exceeding company goals relating to safety, downgrades, profits and production.
- Enforces consistent and fair employment practices. Collaborates with Human Resources to administer company policies and procedures, addresses labor needs and resolves staffing concerns.
- Ensures compliance with GMP, SQF, HACCP, OSHA, USDA, SOP’s and other applicable regulations.
- Establishes and maintains positive working relationships with state and federal regulators, auditors, customers and suppliers and coordinates plant inspections and audits.
- Manages supervisors and is responsible for the overall direction, coordination and evaluation of more than 100 employees in Maintenance, Processing, Packaging, Sanitation and Shipping/Receiving/Warehouse. Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the Creamery’s policies and applicable laws; interviewing, hiring and training employees; planning, assigning and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and administering employee corrective action; addressing complaints and resolving problems.
- Performs other responsibilities, as needed, to support the Creamery’s business objectives.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
- Bachelor’s Degree in Business, Management, Food Science, Dairy Science or other related field; 5 years of management experience in manufacturing , preferably in food industry or equivalent combination of education and experience is required. HACCP and/or SQF certification preferred.
- Proficient in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) is required.
- Strong mechanical, technical, analytical and problem solving skills are required.
- Strong mathematical and written and oral communication skills are required.
- Good conflict management and problem solving skills are required.
- Ability to lead, motivate, direct and develop individuals and a commitment to continuous improvement is required.
- The ability to adapt to changing priorities, multitask, remain organized and a detail oriented approach are required.
