What are the responsibilities and job description for the LVN Life Skills Classroom (High School) position at Pleasanton Independent School District?
Primary Purpose:
Assist school nurse by assuming routine recordkeeping activities, providing minor first aid care, and conducting health screenings at campus level. Work under the immediate guidance and direction of a licensed registered nurse. Provide health services to students. Promote health education and preventive health practices for students.
Qualifications:
Education/Certification:
High School diploma or GED
Valid Texas licenses issued by the Board of Vocational Nurse Examiners
CPR Certification
Special Knowledge/Skills:
Knowledge of basic first aid and cardio pulmonary resuscitation (CPR)
Strong organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills
Proficient keyboarding and file maintenance skills
Ability to use personal computer and software to develop databases and do work processing
Ability to communicate effectively (verbal and written)
Ability to implement policies and procedures
Experience:
One year experience in health-related position, including contact with school-age children (preferred)
Major Responsibilities and Duties:
Health Services
- Provide first aid and emergency care for sick and injured students or staff as directed by school nurse and according to district policy and procedures.
- Serve as health advocate for students.
- Notify parents of accident or illness and secure medical care for students in emergency cases (if parents or emergency contact cannot be reached).
- Coordinate management system to administer medications to students at school. Administer medications according to district policy and procedures, maintaining accurate log of medication dispensed.
- Assist with screening activities including measuring height and weight, testing vision and hearing, and examining spinal cord and scalp.
Instruction
- Participate in development of campus health education curriculum and provide health education to individuals and groups.
- Provide health counseling and instruction to individual students.
Consultation
- Serve as health liaison between supervising school nurse, school, physicians, parents, and community.
- Assess student problems and make appropriate referrals working with supervising school nurse, student, teachers, parents, and medical and health care professionals as needed.
- Participate in Admission, Review, and Dismissal Committee, crisis team, M-Team, and school committees.
- Make home visits to help with student health problems as necessary with permission of principal.
- Communicate regularly with principal regarding health services issues.
Administration
- Review and evaluate immunization records.
- Enforce procedures to ensure proper program administration according to district policy.
- Compile, maintain, and file all reports, records, and other documents required, including clinic records and accurate, updated health records on all students.
- Requisition supplies and equipment needed to maintain clinic inventory.
- Comply with policies established by federal and state laws, Texas Department of Health rule, State Board of Education rule, and board policy in health services area.
- Report potential health and safety hazards to principal.
- Comply with all district and campus routines and regulations.
Professional Development
- Maintain certification in CPR, vision and hearing screening, and as a health screener.
- Maintain blood borne pathogens training.
- Maintain universal precautions training.
- Model behavior that is professional, ethical, and responsible.
- Maintain confidentiality.
Other:
- Perform the duties that are appropriate for a person funded under the ___________________________________ federal program.

Thermometer, blood pressure cuff, audiometer, otoscope, sphygmomanometer, vision screening equipment, thermoscan, basic clinic equipment, personal computer, and copier.
